R366 Course Requirement and Grading Policy

Course Requirement

1. Weekly Unit Tests (15 tests x 10 points a test)

Following each unit you are asked to complete a test related to the content of the online unit, readings, and the activities assigned. These exams will be taken online in the Quiz site located in Oncourse under the Tools tab. Each exam is worth 10 points with extra credit points being offered from time to time. Tests must be completed by MIDNIGHT (EST) on Sundays (late submissions are subject to 50% point deductions per late day).

2. Weekly Activities, Discussion, Chats, etc. (15 weeks x 40 points a week)

Each week you will be asked to interact with other classmates using various tools found in Oncourse and SiteScape. These activities will provide you with an opportunity to get to know each other, learn from each other, and explore topics more in depth. You MUST add to the discussion, chat, etc by WEDNESDAY of every week or you will lose 50% of the total possible points for the assignment. Responses to postings are required no later then Sunday night by midnight (EST). Failure to post a response by midnight will result in a loss of 50% of the total possible points for the assignment. Active participation is mandatory and you cannot participate fully if you only participate on the last day or two of the assignment. It may help to make yourself a note to check into class at least once a day until you get in the habit. It's easy to forget about online courses if given the opportunity.

Points will be assigned based not only on the entries made but also on the quality of the contribution. Integrating theory, information from readings and online units, experience, and practice protocols are a main goals of this course and these weekly activities offer you opportunities to blend information.

3. Quarterly Classic Companion Interviews (4 x 25 points each)

There will be a minimum of four interviews with an older adult (age 55 or older) who is living in the community due throughout the course. These older adults will be your "Classic Companions" and help you to better understand the information you are learning in class and help to answer questions you might have about aging and leisure behaviors. Each interview should be a minimum of two pages, double-spaced, typed, with a title page. Your interviews will be graded based on thoroughness of content, abilities to tie information from class into your report, appearance of your report, and proper use of APA format (5th edition).

4. Final Online Comprehensive Exam (50 points)

The exam will be given online through the Oncourse Quiz site and will be available early in the last week of class. The test will include questions from course units, readings, and activities (discussions, chats, etc). The test must be completed no later than two hours after the scheduled final exam time listed by the University.

R365 Grading Policy

1. Accuracy: You must be as precise as possible. You should demonstrate mastery of important knowledge and concepts, where appropriate. Your own ideas should be presented completely and clearly, with grounding in established theory. Your work should reflect detail, accuracy, completeness, and correct utilization of concepts with proper reasoning and balance.

2. Comprehensiveness and Balance: Cover the essential information as fully and fairly as possible. Your work should show reflective thinking and evidence of personal growth in understanding issues about aging and leisure activity.

3. Clarity and Correctness: You must write clearly and correctly. Word choice and sentence structure must convey meaning without vagueness or ambiguity. Inaccuracies in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, referencing or syntax should be minimal. Write in full sentences. The reader should not be distracted from or confused by the meaning of your writing. Use the spell check feature of your Word program BEFORE submitting your work. Points will be deducted for excessive mistakes.

Your grade for R365 will be based on the points you earn, according to the following distribution:

5. Graduate Students - Additional Weekly Activities (15 weeks x 10 points each)

As a graduate student you will be asked to complete additional assignments each week which will provide you with opportunities to develop critical thinking, explore current research in the fields of leisure and gerontology, and clarify your personal values. You must add to the discussion, chat, etc by WEDNESDAY at MIDNIGHT (EST) or you will lose 50% of the possible points for the assignment. Activities and responses to discussion/chat postings should be completed by SUNDAY at MIDNIGHT (EST).

6. Graduate Student Book Critique

It is a responsibility of graduate students to become familiar with current research in the field of study. Knowing this, you are asked to read and critique a book on getting older, gerontology, or leisure behavior of older adults that you have NOT read already (books are listed on an instructor bibliography). Integrating personal knowledge and information learned in class, you will critique the content of the book and type a 4-5 page double-spaced, APA appropriate report. Grading will be based on your ability to demonstrate critical thinking and an understanding of the information presented in the class. Be sure to include a title page and full reference citation.
