(Only for student teachers taking 6 hours of credit and earning the Reading Minor, who have completed all methods courses and be approved for a Reading Minor and have finished 10 weeks of regular student teaching.)

Brief Course Summaries

1.Practicum in Language (X425/L525), taken for three college credits, examines theory and practice related to language instruction and specifically, effective ways to teach learners with reading difficulties. In a practicum setting, you will learn to:

* Examine theories related to practice

* Think logically about instruction

* Choose appropriate goals geared to individual learner needs

* Create reflective, documentable assessment

* Effectively organize the instructional setting

* Select appropriate resources

* Adapt classroom instruction to provide scaffolding for struggling readers

* Choose strategies for appropriate reasons

* Create a caring instructional environment

* Evaluate your teaching

 

2.Students taking X425/L525 with an ESL emphasis will work from the standard class syllabus and module discussions, but assignments, discussion questions, practicum placements, and readings will have an ESL focus.

3.Student teachers completing the 6-credit Reading Minor Placement will find all information and materials related their placements at the X425 site.
