Recall that ~¾î¼/¾Æ¼ referes to a developmental sequence, that is, one situation leads into another. Therefore, with ~¾î¼/¾Æ¼, the two situations connected are considered to have an inherent/natural relation.

With ~±â ¶§¹®¿¡, on the other hand, the speaker makes an arbitrary connection between two situations.

As you can imagine, there are cases where one is substitutable with the other.
However, there are also cases where only one construction is allowed or more natural, not the other. For example:

  • When you make an excuse or apologize, ~(¾î/¾Æ)¼ is used, not ~±â ¶§¹®¿¡.
  • ´Ê¾î¼/(x)´Ê¾ú±â ¶§¹®¿¡ ¹Ì¾ÈÇÕ´Ï´Ù.
    Â÷°¡ °íÀåÀÌ ³ª¼/(x)Â÷°¡ °íÀåÀÌ ³µ±â ¶§¹®¿¡ ´Ê¾ú½À´Ï´Ù.

  • When the speaker points out an inherent causal relation betwen two events have, ~¾î¼/¾Æ¼ appears to be more natural.
  • A: ¿µÈº¸·¯ °¡¿ä?
    B: ¹Ì¾ÈÇØ¿ä. ³ ¹Ùºü¼/(x)¹Ù»Ú±â ¶§¹®¿¡ ¾È µÅ¿ä.

    A: Ä«¸Þ¶ó Á» ºô·Á ÁÖ¼¼¿ä.
    B: ¼ö¹Ì¾¾ÇÑÅ× ºô·Á Á༭/(x)ºô·Á Áá±â ¶§¹®¿¡ Áö±Ý ¾ø¾î¿ä.

  • One of the requirements for ~(¾î/¾Æ)¼ is that the events involved, especially the causal event, must be real events. Therefore, ~±â ¶§¹®¿¡ is natural in describing a general truth, whereas ~(¾î/¾Æ)¼ is more natural in describing a specific event, especially when there is a causal relation involved.
