The Polite Ending ~어요/아요:

(i) Stem	+ 요	(ii) N-해	+요	(iii) Stem	+아요	(iv) Stem	+어요

				많	아요	있	어요
				좋	아요	맛있	어요

(i) ~요: if a stem ends in 아, 애, 어, 에 without any final consonant (받침),
            simply ~ 요 is attached to the stem. More examples:

(학교에) 가다/가요	(잠을) 자다/자요	(친구를)만나다/만나요

 

(ii) N-해요: a number of verbs consist of a noun plus 하다,
                 e.g. 안녕하다 'be well', 인사하다 'greet', etc.
                When ~어요 is attached to the stem 하-, the combination is contracted to 해요, that is,
 

하+어요 = 해요

More examples:

공부해요	얘기해요	운동해요	숙제해요

                                   

The rest of the predicates are subject to ~어요/아요 variation,
depending on the last vowel of the stem.

(iii) ~아요: if the last vowel of the stem is either 아 or 오 (so-called plus-vowels), ~ 아요 is attached.
Those predicates that end in 오 are subject to contraction:

보다 'see, look': 보+아요=봐요 오다 'come':       오+아요=와요

(텔레비전을) 봐요	(집에) 오다/와요

 

(iv) ~어요: all the other predicates take ~어요.
먹다 'eat':먹어요, 있다 'exist': 있어요, 넓다 'be spacious': 넓어요
맛있다 'be tasteful, delicious': 맛있어요 맛없다 'be tasteless':맛없어요

Those predicates that end in a vowel (e.g. 이 or 우) are subject to contraction.

마시다 'drink':마시+어요=마셔요 주다 'give':       주+어요=줘요

(커피를)마셔요	(꽃을) 줘요
