H205c: Term Paper & Report

Written Paper: Mechanics

Your paper will probably need to be 8-12 pages long.
Include a Bibliography formatted in some standard style. See the IU Library "Help with citing" page for three common styles.
You can also download free bibliographic software at IU. See "Endnote."
Be careful to provide references for quotations and close paraphrases. You may use footnotes, endnotes, or short references
within the body of the paper. For example: (Darwin, 1859, p. 37) Writing Tutorial Services provides help at various locations around campus. Don't hesitate to ask them questions!
And don't forget to use Spell Check!

Written Paper: Content

The organization of your paper will depend on the topic and your choice of mode of presentation. You may adopt a standard essay style (an intro in which you say what you're going to, etc.). But if you wish, you can make it more like a newspaper story with a human interest "hook" at the beginning.
What is most important is that you present both sides of the controversy, with special attention to the "under dog."
Where possible, highlight the various factors that impeded resolution of the controversy as well as the breakthroughs that helped resolve it.
Be sure to include some scholarly sources that go beyond Wikipedia!. For example, consult Google Scholar and the standard reference works listed on the course homepage.
Don't hesitate to use the "Ask a Librarian" tab on the IUB Library website. Or you can go in person to the Reference Desk on the East side of the Main Library.

Oral Presentation: Delivery

You will have at least ten minutes to present your report and more time to prepare it than was the case with the three short presentations you've given so far.
Here are some suggestions:

*Check on the pronunciation of names and obscure words before you talk.

*If you read parts of your presentation, practice beforehand so you can look up.
*Speak so that you can easily be heard at the back of the room (where I'll be sitting)
and if you use slides make sure they're visible from the back.

*But pitch your presentation to your classmates, not me. Minimiize boring parts! (You can include those in your written paper.)
