IU Dance Theatre Selected for American College Dance Festival's Gala Performance
Congratulations to the Indiana University Dance Theatre for being selected for the American College Dance Festival’s Gala Performance, March 22, 2010. Utam Moses’ A Strange Peace and Elizabeth Shea’s Taking Flight were selected by conference adjudicators. Participating dancers were Andranise Baxter, Jenna Blumenfeld, Kevin Carmichael, Abigail Chylack, Melanie Griffin, Laura Hunter, Kristine Jones, Abigail Lansdown, Utam Moses, Joanna Paul, Andre Rivers, Eric Schaefer, and Brianna Wieclaw.

IU Contemporary Dance Program’s Summer Intensive for High School Students Featured in Dance Studio Life Magazine
Annie Ellis, student from last summer’s intensive for high school students, wrote about her experiences in Dance Studio Life, Thinking Out Loud: Sneak Peak at College Dance. Annie will be a freshman majoring in dance next fall at Indiana University. Read article.
Overseas Study Opportunity in Israel
The Rothberg International School of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (RIS) and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (JAMD) are pleased to announce the first Spring Session of Dance Jerusalem, a new program which combines artistic training in dance skills and technique with academic exposure to Israel's challenging social, historical and cultural environment. The Spring session compliments our full-year and fall semester DanceJerusalem programs. DanceJerusalem offers university-level artistic and technical training in the disciplines of Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance (including Ohad Naharain’s GaGa taught by dancers of the BatSheva Dance Company), Choreography, Repertoire and Improvisation. Within the framework of a comprehensive survey course, "Dance in Israel," students will create, rehearse and perform works with outstanding Israeli composers and choreographers. Students will also be able to choose from a wide range of academic courses at the Rothberg School in Religious, Israel and Middle Eastern Studies, Behavioral Sciences and Environmental Studies, as well as Hebrew Language. At the completion of the program, students will receive a joint certificate as well as separate academic transcripts from each institution. The DanceJerusalem Spring Session will begin with the Winter Ulpan), starting January 19, 2011 through February 10, 2011. Immediately following will be the DanceJerusalem Spring session: February 13–June 30, 2011, with dance classes in the morning (6 credits) and 2 classes at the RIS in the afternoon (6 credits).

The Legacy of Graham
The IU Contemporary Dance Program was awarded an American Masterpieces: Dance – College Component grant by Dance/USA and the National Endowment for the Arts, for the re-staging of Martha Graham’s Panorama.

- Adjunct Instructor Roberta Wong has received an Individual Artist Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission as well as a Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Indianapolis Arts Council.
- Senior Courtney Ramm was awarded a Summer Research Grant from the Hutton Honors College for her project, Searching for the "Ideal" Diet for Dancers: A comparison of a Holistic vs. Standard American Approach to Diet.
- Former dance major Noah Trulock is an apprentice with Dance Kaleidoscope in Indianapolis, IN, under the direction of former Graham soloist David Hochoy.
- Visiting Lecturer in dance Selene Carter, Assistant Professor in Textiles Rowland Ricketts, and graduate student Amy Burrell have been awarded a grant from IU’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Program for their project, Imago Score: Collaborative Research in Creative Process.
- Dance coordinator Elizabeth Shea was awarded a mini-workshop grant from IU’s Institute for Advanced Study for her proposal Manipulation of the Environment: A Study of the Expert Craftsmanship and Genius of Modern Dance Choreography David Parsons.
- Graduating senior Abigail Lansdown has been accepted as an apprentice with professional dance company Kim Robards Dance in Denver, Colorado.
- Several dance majors were awarded Creative Activity Grants from the Hutton Honors College for summer study: Leah Boresow will study at gloATL: Laura Hunter will study at the Martha Graham School for Contemporary Dance, and Melanie Griffin will attend the Parsons Summer Dance Intensive.
- Sophomores Leah Boresow and Melissa Strain have been awarded Hutton Honors College International Experiences Grants, and will travel to Israel next year for the inaugural offering of Dance Jerusalem, a new study abroad program offered by the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and Hebrew University. Sophomores Kate Page and Arianna Greene have also been accepted into the program.
- IU dance majors Kelsey Breece, Kevin Carmichael, Melissa Strain and Brianna Wieclaw have been awarded internships with Cathy Roe Ultimate Dance (under the supervision of faculty member Sherilyn Nott Foley).
- Junior dance major Kelsey Breece has been awarded a month-long scholarship to study at EDGE Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles, CA.
- Congratulations to Kristine Jones, Kelsey Breece, and Eric Schaefer, who were awarded the Jane Fox Endowment Fund Scholarships for 2010. Also congratulations to Melanie Griffin, who was awarded the Jane Fox Summer Travel Scholarship and Laura Hunter, who was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to study at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance this summer.
- Sophomore dance major Molly O’Reilly was awarded the HPER Academic and Extracurricular Excellence Scholarship.
- The Indiana University Dance Theatre recently attended the American College Dance Festival, East Central Region, in Athens, Ohio and presented senior undergraduate Utam Moses’ A Strange Peace and Elizabeth Shea’s Taking Flight for adjudicated performance. Both pieces were selected to be performed in the closing gala, March 22, 2010. Visiting Lecturer Selene Carter’s work, Imago, was performed at the Informal Concert.
- Program coordinator Elizabeth Shea’s work, Taking Flight, was accepted for performance at the 2010 AAPHERD Dance Gala, and performed by Andranise Baxter, Jenna Blumenfeld, Kevin Carmichael, Abigail Chylack, Jayme Deeb, Melanie Griffin, Laura Hunter, Kristine Jones, Abigail Lansdown, Joanna Paul, Andre Rivers, and Eric Schaefer March 18 in Indianapolis, IN.
- Congratulations to Kristine Jones, Laura Hunter, Andre Rivers, Melanie Griffin, Kelsey Breece, and Joseph Musiel who were awarded 1st through 6th place respectively in the National Society of Arts and Letters Annual Competition in Contemporary Dance, February 14, 2010.
- Elizabeth Shea and Jeffrey Hass, Jacob’s School of Music, were selected to present both a paper and performance piece at the World Dance Alliance Global Event in New York City, June 12-19 at NYU’s Steinhard School and Dance Theatre Workshop. They will present CREATING INTEGRATED MUSIC AND VIDEO FOR DANCE: LESSONS LEARNED AND LESSONS IGNORED as well as their performance piece, Unstrung.
- Dance faculty member, Sherilyn Nott Foley, will dance with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in its annual million dollar production of Yuletide Celebration at the Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis. Yuletide runs from December 4th through December 23rd, with twenty-six performances featuring an all-star cast, and is seen by more than 40,000 people annually.
- Elizabeth Shea’s Unstrung, with original score by Jacob’s School of Music composition professor Jeffrey Hass, has been selected for performance at the 2009 International Computer Music Conference in Montreal, Canada, August 16-21. Senior dance major Abbe Lansdown will perform the work.
- Senior dance majors Andranise Baxter, Jenna Blumenfeld, and Sierra Codalata were awarded the Jane Fox Dance Scholarship at the HPER Awards Banquet, April 23, 2009. Junior Krissy Jones was awarded the Kate C. Remley Memorial Scholarship.
- Faculty member Roberta Wong recently received two Creative Renewal Fellowships from the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
- Alum Nate Erwin and faculty member Selene Carter have received scholarships to attend the Bill Evans Summer Dance 2009 Teacher’s Intensives.
- Senior dance major Joanna Paul has received a grant for international study from the Hutton Honors College as well as a summer study grant from the IU Contemporary Dance Program to attend Laban’s (London) 2009 Summer School.
- Senior dance major Courtney Ramm has been awarded the Edward L. Hutton International Experiences Program Grant for 2009 summer study, and has additionally been named a Mary and Tom Martz Scholar.
- Dance coordinator Elizabeth Shea has been selected to present A Model for Integrating Kinesiology into a Dance Major Curriculum at the 2009 NDEO Annual Conference, Take a Bite of the Apple: Exploring Resources to Promote Best Practices, New York City, NY, June 24-28. Shea was also recently promoted to Clinical Associate Professor of Kinesiology and received the 2009 HPER Trustees Teaching Award.
- Indiana University modern dance majors Kelly McCormick Bangs, Noah Trulock, Colleen Welch and graduate student/adjunct faculty Justin Zuschlag were selected to perform Bill Evans’ Impressions of Willow Bay at the Gala Performance of the American College Dance Festival, East Central Region, March 18-21, Akron, Ohio. Faculty members Selene Carter and Elizabeth Shea were invited to teach at the festival, and Shea has been elected to the ACDFA National Board of Directors for a three-year term.
- Dance major alum Kelly McCormick Bangs was awarded first place in the Contemporary Dance Competition sponsored by the National Society of Arts and Letters. Sophomore dance major Kelsey Breece was awarded second place, and junior dance major Joanna Paul was awarded third place. Bangs and Breece performed at the annual Showcase of the Arts on April 19, 2009.
- Senior dance major Colleen Welch was nominated for Indiana University Senior Recognition Awards.
- Dance major alum Lauren Weber is dancing with the Omaha Modern Dance Collective and has also been selected as one of twelve dancers state-wide to participate in Diavolo Project: Nebraska.

- IU dance alum Abigail Rich and faculty member Selene Carter have both been accepted into the Society of Dance History Scholars. Ms Rich will present Choreographed Gender: Gender Topographies in Paul Taylor's Aureole and Ms. Carter will present Choreographing Murals in Indiana: The Public Art of Lester Horton and Thomas Hart Benton at the 2009 annual conference at Stanford University.
- Dance faculty member Sherilyn Foley has been hired by CRU Dance and Algy/Star Styled Dance Costumes as the choreographer to present their new costume line.
- Dance Coordinator Elizabeth Shea presented Coming to Light: An Etude at Festival 39: New Music 2009, held at Ball State University, Muncie, IN. IU Professor Jeffrey Hass composed the score, and alum Kelly McCormick Bangs performed the work.
- Visiting Lecturer Selene Carter performed at the International Symposium of Improvised Music, and presented a new media collaboration with Andrew Bucksbarg, Assistant Professor, IU Department of Telecommunications.
- IU faculty Gwendolyn Hamm, Elizabeth Shea, George Pinney, Jeffrey Hass, Iris Rosa and Selene Carter received a Fran Snygg Endowment Grant to produce The Community of Dance, presented January 16 and 17, 2009 at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre, Bloomington, IN. Ms. Carter also received a Fran Snygg Grant for Artistic Collaboration for her new work Land/mark.
- The IU Contemporary Dance Program has been awarded an American Masterpieces: Dance – College Component Grant, by Dance/USA and the National Endowment for the Arts, a national dance service organization. The grant provides funds for the restaging of Martha Graham’s Panorama.
