Dr. Ryan Brewer and Dr. Paul Pedersen at Dr. Brewer's graduation cremony in 2011.
The Sport Management program at Indiana University prepared Dr. Kaburakis well for continued excellence in Higher Education and administration. He entered the Indiana University family in 2001, after practicing law in Greece, and coaching basketball at the American College of Thessaloniki, Aris Basketball Club, and the national teams of Greece. He completed his PhD in 2005, majoring in Sport Management, teaching and conducting research in Sport Law, Policy, NCAA Compliance, and Management, with a minor in Strategic Management through the Department of Management in the Kelley School of Business.
Setting up camp at his wife’s hometown, St. Louis, where Kristin Folkl Kaburakis serves as the Director of Development for the St. Louis Sports Commission, he is an Assistant Professor of Management and Sports Business at Saint Louis University (SLU) John Cook School of Business (JCSB), Department of Management. Working with several stakeholders around the nation, AACSB-accredited Business Schools’ administrators, sport management faculty, and key industry constituents, it is Dr. Kaburakis’ vision, supported by St. Louis region’s business partners, an outstanding SLU alumni network, and a very active and involved Sports Business Advisory Board and JCSB faculty, to develop an internationally competitive, comprehensive sport business education program, encompassing undergraduate, MS/MBA, and PhD levels of study, in the research intensive setting and Jesuit ethos St. Louis University provides.
Prior to his SLU appointment, and following his tenure as Visiting Professor at Indiana University and Washington University Law School in St. Louis, he served as Assistant Professor and Director of the Sport Management Graduate Program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), 2006-2010. At the time of his August 2010 departure for SLU, the SIUE Graduate Sport Management Program was the strongest in the Department and one of the healthiest in the School. Subsequent to Dr. Kaburakis’ arrival, records demonstrated a 70% increase in SIUE Sport Management majors’ enrollment.
As of Summer 2010, Dr. Kaburakis has published ten peer-reviewed journal and law review articles in the most highly regarded journals of the sport law and management field, four book chapters, and offered several other contributions in national and international academic scholarship and sport business practice settings. His manuscript entitled “‘It’s in the likeness’. NCAA Student-Athletes’ Rights of Publicity, EA Sports, and the video-game industry. The Keller forecast.” was the feature article at the 2009 summer issue of the Entertainment and Sport Lawyer, the American Bar Association’s publication reaching thousands of attorneys, law professors, and practitioners in the entertainment and sport industry. He has presented over 30 research studies and sport management and law practice sessions in such international conferences and national meetings as NASSM, EASM, SRLA, SLA, NABC, WBCA, NACDA, NAAC, and NCAA. He has offered Continuing Legal Education credit sessions in Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, Marquette University Law School, and national law and compliance conventions. He continues to travel extensively overseas and in the US on consulting matters of his expertise.
Two recent professional service initiatives have featured establishing a database of expert witnesses in Sport Law and Policy matters, and setting the foundation for more Faculty involvement in NCAA Compliance via policy research, proposals’ drafting, and voting preparation in NCAA legislative circles. He serves on various Committees, Editorial and Review Boards, as well as on international sport consulting firms’ and international sport governing bodies’ advisory boards.
As of January 2010, four of Dr. Kaburakis’ doctoral dissertation policy recommendations have been espoused by NCAA Division I Governance bodies (Amateurism Cabinet, Legislative Council, and the voting majority of Division I member institutions and conferences). Dr. Kaburakis’ research has been cited and incorporated in the development of appellate bodies and the new process of amateurism certification, and has been the backbone of NCAA DI Proposal 2009-22, Dr. Kaburakis’ second policy recommendation in his 2005 dissertation, creating a fair and equitable treatment of international student-athletes, considering the differences in global sport governance systems.
In September of 2010, Dr. Kaburakis organized the prestigious and well coveted International Sport Law and Business Conference (ISLBC), in Istanbul, Turkey, co-hosted by the Comparative Law Centre of Istanbul University Law Faculty, in collaboration with the International Association of Sports Law and other academic and industry groups. Keynote panels featured top executives and scholars in the field and the research contributions accepted and presented at the conference were outstanding. Most notably, the ISLBC international sport labor summit and the human rights and gender issues forum entailed participation from some of the most significant contributors in international sport law and policy, and yield significant findings in view of ensuing developments in international sport administration. In fact, these findings led to policy-drafting consensus and initiatives undertaken by the key stakeholders subsequent to ISLBC sessions.
For more information, research output, and law and policy issues and developments refer to: http://www.kaburakis.com/Kristin and Tassos Kaburakis happily reside in South County, St. Louis, and enjoy the fun and games of their four-year-old son Ian Nicholas, and two-year-old daughter Sophia Penelope.

Yoo is nearing the completion of his doctorate in sport management at Indiana University. He graduated from Seoul National University (SNU) with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science and a Master’s degree in Education. Yoo worked as a journalist for 13 years and as a doctoral student he has been in an instructor for lecture classes, taught physical activity (e.g., golf) classes, worked as an assistant on a major grant, and researched various aspects of sport communication. His main interest – commencing in his early educational endeavors (e.g., SNU) – has been in understanding why human beings participate in sports. This philosophical inquiry eventually led to his pursuit of covering news around the world. Yoo covered sports for around ten years at Maeil Business Newspaper, which has the largest circulation among Korean economic dailies. His days as a newspaper professional were filled with outstanding opportunities as he had the opportunity to meet many excellent players and athletes. Through the intimate relationship he developed through his coverage of such individuals, Yoo came to realize again the importance and attraction of sports. Prior to pursuing his doctorate, Yoo began his life anew as a graduate student majoring in mass communication at Southern Illinois University. He completed that master’s at SIU and entered into the doctoral program at Indiana University. Yoo’s wife (Eunha Oh) and two sons (Jinsuh and Jinha) finally accepted him as a sincere member of the family during his graduate work. His main research interest is how the Korean media’s coverage differed for tournaments held in Korean and those held in the United States. During Yoo’s spare time he often plays golf and visualizes the plot of a novel that portrays an athlete hero’s success and collapse.

Yoo worked as a journalist for 13 years and as a doctoral student he has been in an instructor for lecture classes, taught physical activity (e.g., golf) classes, worked as an assistant on a major grant, and researched various aspects of sport communication.
