Reaction sheet #13, for lecture class, Thursday, September 30

1.  One of the ways I like to think about the past is to think about the future.  Every time I feel disappointment in or contempt for the generation of people, say, 200 years ago, I think about how people 200 years from now will express disappointment in and contempt for me and my generation, which has exhibited more than its share of folly.  (Has yours already done so too?) But let’s flip this around -- instead of the tons of folly created by us and surrounding us, what about the ounces of progress?  Is there anything from the present day you think is a truly worthy contribution to the progress of American and world history?

2.  Is there anything you are doing personally -- by doing I mean contributing to something larger than yourself -- which is worthy of preserving for the sake of the future?  Or will people in the future be busy trying to fix the mess you are making, never mind avoiding anything that looks like your silly clothes and haircuts?....
