Reaction sheet #1, for class, Thursday, September 2

1. According to Lewin, why has the United States, in the last generation, slipped from 1st to 12th in global rankings of college graduation ranks?  What reasons for the decline might you add to the equation, which Lewin does not address in this too-brief article?

2. According to Faust, what are the costs of concentrating too narrowly on the business/labor value of a college education in creating a nation’s workforce?  What else is there in a society, besides an economy?  What other economic functions are there, besides laboring for businesses?

3. According to Wallace, why are some (not all) leading business schools becoming increasingly interested in the lessons of the humanities, rather than in purely a “business” education?  Why is this trend happening suddenly during the current economic crisis in the United States and in many parts of the world?  What does a traditional business-school education seem to lack, according to business-school reformers, which can be rectified by the influence of the humanities?  (You should know that history is in the humanities, of course.)
