Admitted Students
You Can Call Yourself an Indiana Hoosier
Congratulations! Now that you’ve been admitted to IU, there are a few things you’ll need to do to enroll as an official IU student and prepare for the start of college.
If you are an admitted international student, please visit the website for the Office of International Services. The enrollment process for international students varies slightly from that of U.S. students and some of the steps below will not apply to you. You’ll receive detailed information explaining your next steps along with your letter of admission. If you have questions, write to newtoiu@indiana.edu.
Follow These Steps and You’ll Be All Set for Fall
- Set up your computer account (if you have not already done so). To do so, you will need your 10-digit University ID number, which was included in your acceptance packet. After you create your account in OneStart, it may take up to 48 hours for our system to be updated with your information.
- Apply for housing. This is the first step we encourage all admitted students to take, even if you’re not positive you’re going to attend IU. Information about housing options and the housing contract/application are available on the Residential Programs and Services website. The housing application fee is $300, $200 of which is refundable if you notify RPS at housing@indiana.edu by July 1 that you will not be attending IU.
- Pay your enrollment deposit. For freshmen entering in the fall semester, the non-refundable $100 deposit holds your place in the incoming class and must be submitted by May 1. (If you were admitted after May 1, you have three weeks after you were notified of your acceptance to submit your enrollment deposit.) Visit intenttoenroll.indiana.edu for further instructions and to pay your enrollment deposit. The deposit will be credited as a payment toward your first-semester expenses.
- Apply for financial aid. You’ll need to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after January 1, but before March 10, to be considered for need-based aid and many of IU’s scholarship programs. This does not apply to students who are not U.S. citizens.
- Create Authorized Payer access for your parents and others. Let your parents (and whomever else you choose) set up e-bill notifications, pay bills electronically, and view bursar account details. The Office of the Bursar has easy instructions for you to set up an authorized payer.
- Designate the individuals (such as your parents) you want to view important student information.
- Keep up the good work. To maintain your status as an admitted student, you’ll need to successfully complete the high school course work (or final term for transfer students) listed on your application, maintain your solid academic performance, and demonstrate continued academic integrity.
- Plan to attend a Red Carpet Day. Red Carpet Days are your chance to get to know your classmates, explore the campus, and see what it's like to be an IU student. You will have the opportunity to tour the campus, hear about the IU experience from current students and faculty and ask them questions, learn about academic programs, and get the facts about your next steps, including Orientation. Space is limited and reservations are required. Red Carpet Days will be held on the following dates:
- February 27
- March 5, 9, 19, 23, 26, 28
- April 2, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 16, 18, 23, 25, 27
- Get Connected. "Like" us on Facebook so you can ask questions, meet other admitted students, and get updates about IU. So that your parents stay in the loop, have them "Like" our Parent Facebook page.
- Consider signing up for Intensive Freshman Seminars (IFS). IFS is a three-week summer program during which you’ll take one class, live in the residence halls, and start to adjust to life on campus.
- Submit your immunization information. All students must complete the immunization compliance form and submit it to the Office of the Registrar prior to the first day of classes.
- Register for and attend New Student Orientation. Starting in mid-April, the Office of First Year Experience Programs will send out official invitations to students. Freshmen entering for the fall semester must have paid their $100 enrollment deposit to receive their invitation. International students will receive information about orientation through the Office of International Services.
