Trip to Donnehue Cave

Email Grace Baumann at gmbauman@indiana.edu to be included in the trip.

Please let us know whether you need to borrow a club helmet and whether you are able to drive (to help with the carpooling).
We will meet in the Geology building parking lot at noon. It is a 45 minute drive down to the Bedford area and we expect to be in the cave for about 2-3 hours. This is a stream cave and we will get wet to at least the knee. So you don't become too cold, you should wear a long sleeve shirt. REMEMBER to bring: 3 AA batteries, full change of clothes, and a trash bag to store your wet/muddy clothes. Also bring a towel to help you change discretely in the mall parking lot or whatever public venue the cars are left at.

Trip to Wayne's Cave

Email Elliot Stahl at copperhead210@SBCGLOBAL.NET to be included in this trip.
This Sunday Elliot is leading a trip into Waynes Cave, which is just west of town and is owned by a karst conservancy.

We are meeting at 12 pm (noon) behind the Geology building. It is about a 15 mintue drive to the cave.

This trip is not open to begginers (people who have never been caving before, or who have only done one trip etc..)

The cave starts as a climbdown and then enters a 1200' crawlway, most of which is very low (belly crawl) with damp places and mud. On the other side of this crawl we are going to tour as much of the main cave as we can. This will include lots of walking, stooping, other short crawls, easy climbs, and going over breakdown. Expect to be in the cave for at least 5 hours, and maybe as much as 7 hours.

For this reason, everyone must bring some sort of small pack with extra food and water, and an extra top layer in case you might get cold. However keep in mind there is a long crawl and the best way to carry a pack through that is either by using a fanny pack around your waist, or some type of small compact bag that you can attach to your foot and drag behind you. Also long pants (or shorts and long underwear of some type) is required, and atleast one layer of clothing with long sleeves. Gloves are highly recomended but not required, however good knee pads and boots or sturdy tennis shoes are required.

NOTE: if anyone shows up with some kind of shoes that are not boots or closed toed sturdy tennis shoes, and knee pads as well as some way to carry food and water, they will NOT BE ALLOWED on the TRIP!

I know this sounds obnoxious however this is going to be a long and somewhat challenging cave trip and if you bring these things it will be much more enjoyable!

Also of course remember to bring a
-trash bag
-change of clothes (complete..this means everything)
-3 AA batteries for use with club headlamps, and a back light if you have one or extra batteries.

If we get another person to go who can lead the trip, we might split up into two groups (a fast and slow group) for people who might not want to go way to the back of the cave. Regardless it should be a very fun and sporting cave trip.

If you want to go please do reply to this email and let me know that you will be going, and if you plan to drive. Parking is not a problem, so we can have many drivers.

Trip to Sullivan's Cave

Email Greg at gmenkedi@indiana.edu to be included in this trip
We will be leaving from behind Geology on this Saturday, Feb.4 at 11 a.m. It will take approx 45 minutes to get to the cave and we will spend about 4-5 hours inside the cave. After leaving the cave and changing clothes, most of us will probably choose to stop and grab a bite to eat in Bedford, before returning to Bloomington. So do not expect to get back until about 6-7 p.m. give or take. If some vehicles choose to leave directly fromt he cave and head back that is an option.

As far as the cave goes, Sullivan is a large cave with some crawling, climbing, stoop-walking, walking in water (ankle to waist deep) and some nice easy walking passages. So be prepared for a little bit of everything. This is a great trip for various experience levels, so we look forward to having a nice mix of people for the trip. For those of you that made the first trip to Sullivan last semester, feel free to join in again. Because we are planning on taking a little different route through the cave this time.

Also since we will be underground for a few hours, you may opt to have water and a snack, so prepare accordingly. Make sure to bring the usual 3 AA batteries for the lights and knee pads, sturdy shoes/boots and caving attire. A full change of clothes (head to toe) and a bag for the dirty clothes. Spare lights and a small pack to carry items in can be useful as well.

We currently have 12 lights and helmets and a couple people signed up for the trip. So if you are interested and need to borrow club gear, you will need to let me know asap, in order to get a spot for the trip. If you signed up at the meeting, I've reserved your spot, so you are good to go!

Trip to Coon and Eversole Caves

Email Greg at gmenkedi@indiana.edu to be included in this trip
These caves will offer a variety of cave life and formations. The caves will involve the normal mix of walking, crawling, wet streams, muddy and dry passages. So you should expect to get quite wet and muddy so bring appropriate caving attire, as well as a full change of dry clean clothes. As always, bring gloves, sturdy shoes or boots, 3 or more AA batteries for the lights. Each cave is relatively short and we will spend approximately 3-5 hours caving, the length will be dictated by the speed and size of the group. So you may want to bring water and a snack. Also additional small lights are always a great idea. Any items can be carried in cargo pockets, or a small pack.
The trip will leave from behind Geology at 11:00 on Sunday, Jan. 22. It will take us about 1 hour to drive down and an hour to drive back. So do not plan to return to Bloomington until early evening. We may also choose to stop and grab a bite to eat on the way back, so plan accordingly. I'm going to cap this trip at or around 15 members.

**Trips leave from behind the geology building unless otherwise stated.

**If you are borrowing an CCIU helmet and light, please remember to bring four AA-batteries with you.

***Always bring a complete change of clothes & shoes, a trashbag to put your muddy stuff in, a towel, and a bottle of water & a snack. You'll need these after exiting the cave and before driving home.

Cave Information

The CCIU has compiled the following list of horizontal caves to which trips are commonly scheduled. This information is quite general and should not be used as a guide, but merely to give you information to help you determine which trips you would like to sign up for. You must have gone to at least two of five beginner caves before you will be allowed to sign up for an intermediate trip. Trip and travel times are approximated.

Cave Level Cave conditions & special challenges Trip duration & travel time
Buckner's Beginner Dry. 700' entrance crawlway; beyond this point, mainly walking passage. 3-4 hours underground; 30 minutes travel time
Wayne's Lost Intermediate-Advanced Wet. Long crawlways and tight passages. 4-7 hours underground; 30 minutes travel time
Sullivan's Beginner-Intermediate Dry and/or wet, depending on the trip. Mostly walking passage. 3-6 hours underground; 45 minutes travel time
