FAQs

Do I have to be pre-law to join?

No. Students of any major are eligible to apply to join the Department. And there is no specific "pre-law" major at IU.

Why do you say you prefer underclassmen? Is it even worth applying if I am a junior or a senior?

Our Department depends on an experienced, knowledgeable staff. Younger students have more time to build knowledge and skills essential to maintaining an effective Department. But, we do accept upperclassmen.

How does the application process work?

First, please note that competition is often stiff for spots in the Department, with many qualified individuals applying for very few vacancies. Applications are reviewed by a board of officers; the best candidates will be offered interviews, and the most solid of those will be offered positions as case managers or officers.

What does training consist of?

Case manager candidates must attend several hour-long sessions where they will learn the ins and outs of the Department, the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct, the campus judicial system, and specialized skills such as writing statements and approaching different types of cases. Candidates must pass an exam at the end of the semester before they are allowed to take cases. Officer candidates will receive additional, individualized training.

How long do case managers serve?

Case managers serve terms of one academic year. Those who serve satisfactorily will be offered reappointment at the end of each year.

What's the time commitment?

A case manager should expect to attend meetings and training several times a semester. Otherwise, the time commitment varies depending on the Department's caseload. Officers will be expected to devote at least several hours a week to their duties.

Are case managers paid?

No. Like most members of student government, we are unpaid volunteers.
