Presented a session entitled “Visual Design Research: Past, Present, and Future,” which describes the evolution in visual design research from new to stabilized to established technologies.     February, 1999 - Co-Speaker, Association for Educational Communications and Technology Convention, Houston, Texas. Participated in a panel discussion entitled “AECT Internships: Shaping the Future of the Field,” which provided an overview of the internship program for graduate students.

    November, 1998 - Speaker, Annual WebNet World Conference of the WWW, Internet, & Intranet, Orlando, FL. Presented a session entitled “From syllabus to infinity: The gradual implementation of a course website,” which outlined the process of developing a consistent and coherent website over the course of several semesters and included guidelines for gradual website development.     November, 1998 - Speaker, Annual WebNet World Conference of the WWW, Internet, & Intranet, Orlando, FL. Presented a session entitled “The ABC's of Web Visual Interface Design,” which proposed the unified ABC’s R’ US visual design theory as a means of streamlining the visual design process for the WWW.     February, 1998 - Speaker, Association for Educational Communications and Technology Convention, St. Louis, Missouri. Presented a session entitled “Analysis-based Message Design: Rethinking Screen Design Guidelines,” which integrated existing interface design research with a four-step design process, the fourth step of which described the ABC’s R’ US design principles.     April, 1997 - Co-Speaker, North Central Regional Educational Laboratory Conference for Teacher Education and Technology: Issues and Ideas, Bloomington, Indiana. With other W200 instructors co-presented a session entitled “Rethinking preservice technology education: Integration and electronic textbooks,” which illustrated the redesign of the course to integrate teaching and technology.     May, 1994 - Co-Speaker, Consortium of Magnet and Public Choice Schools Conference, Tampa, Florida. Presented a session entitled "Union Academy Bank Simulation: Put Your Trust in Us," which outlined the process of developing and implementing a school-wide bank simulation.

    October, 1993 - Speaker, Florida Foreign Language Association Convention, Palm Beach, Florida. Presented a session entitled "How Can Computers Make My Life Easier," which outlined time-saving uses of computers for foreign language teachers.

Research Areas

    Combine research and teaching to prepare future teachers and instructional designers for the challenges of the new millennium.

Service/Outreach Projects

    1998 - Present: Committee on Teaching, Indiana University School of Education, Bloomington, Indiana. Represent associate instructors in the School of Education. Assist in selecting award winners for both associate instructor and professor teaching awards.

    1999 - Convention Volunteer, Association for Educational Communications and Technology Convention, Houston, Texas. Served as session chair and assisted in equipment distribution.

    1998 - Convention Volunteer, Annual WebNet World Conference of the WWW, Internet, & Intranet, Orlando, FL. Assisted with conference registration.

    1998 - Proposal Reviewer, Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association, San Diego, CA. Reviewed conference proposals for the Education in Science and Technology Special Interest Group.

    1993-1994: Chairman of the Board of the UA Bank Project, Union Academy Magnet School, Bartow, Florida. Elected to work with the members of the Superintendent’s Bankers Council and the faculty and administration of Union Academy Magnet School in order to develop a school-wide bank simulation.

    1990-1991: President of the Sociedad Hispánica Carolinesa, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Elected to presidency by fellow graduate students. Organized a Spanish film series, a lecture series, and a materials file.

Honors/Awards

    Spring, 1999 - Jerrold E. Kemp Instructional Systems Technology Award, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Awarded a award for the innovative development of the Great Computer Mystery Web site (located at http://www.indiana.edu/~gcm/).

    Spring, 1999 - ECT Foundation Mentor Scholarship Award, Association of Educational Communications and Technology. Awarded a national scholarship for leadership potential in the field of Instructional Systems Technology.

    Spring, 1998 - Nominated for Outstanding Associate Instructor Award, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Nominated by program coordinator based upon student feedback and the academic quality of the course.

    Spring, 1998 - AECT Annual Convention Intern, Association of Educational Communications and Technology, 1998 Annual Convention, St. Louis, Missouri. Selected to represent the Division of Instructional Design during sessions, speeches, and business meetings.

    Spring, 1994 - Economics Expo, Union Academy Magnet School, Bartow, Florida. Co-authored the UA Bank Economics Expo project which won at both the District and State levels.
