Research Areas

I am interested in improving education and schooling in general through the design of computer-mediated products, research on interaction design, usability engineering, and educational research methodologies. I am also interested in epistemology -- i.e., ways of knowing.

Service/Outreach Projects

As Web Director for the School of Education, I coordinate the entire Web site -- about 4,000 pages. I am responsible for the overall design and have developed EdWeb publishing tools in PHP. I also train content providers to use these tools to maintain their parts of the overall Web site. The Web content is stored in XML format by the EdWeb tools.

In the year 2001, the School of Education Web site was accessed over 28 million times.

FedEx Project: I led a student team in R641 which developed a Web prototype for orienting new hires at FedEx to the company, its history, and basic knowledge required for staffing their support centers.

Medical Sciences Department, Pathology Module Evalaution: I led a student team in R690 to develop and validate a questionnaire for evaluating instructional modules which supplement the pathology course which is taken by medical students.

Medical Sciences Department, Histology Project: I led a student team in R641 which developed prototype quizzes on the Web for IU medical students in their histology course -- digital photographs of microscopic slides are presented for students to identify what kind of tissue or cell or structure is present.

Honors/Awards

Frick, T. (Dec., 1996). Keynote address to the International Symposium on New Technologies of Instruction, Taipei, Taiwan: Criteria for Evaluating use of Information Technology in K-12 Education.
