Directions to Bloomington, INDIANA

NOTE: Beware of time zone difference.  It’s confusing.  Bloomington (and most of Indiana) is on Eastern time, but does not have daylight savings time. In effect, this means that until Sunday (October 27) Bloomington is on the same time as Central time, but as of Sunday (October 27) it is on the same time as eastern time.  We do not put our clocks back an hour.  

Flying:  If you are flying to the Indianapolis airport, take the Bloomington Shuttle to Bloomington.  The shuttle runs every two hours
from the airport at 8:40, 10:40, 12:40, etc.  If you are coming straight to campus, get off at the IU Memorial Union and ask someone
to direct you to Jordan Hall (or go to the hotel lobby and ask for a hard copy map).  If you are going to the University Plaza Hotel, get off at Hampton Inn and walk across the street to the University Plaza Hotel.  The shuttle is $20 one-way, $35 round-trip.  Their phone is (800) 589-6004 (reservations are not necessary.)

Driving 1:  For those going through Indianapolis
    1. Drive to Indianapolis (not the scenic route):
           a. From Ohio : I-70 West until Indianapolis
           b. From Michigan: I-69 South until Indianapolis
           c. From Illinois: I-74 East until Indianapolis
           d. From the Chicago area:  I-65 South until Indianapolis
           (When approaching Indianapolis, take the second 465 exit)
     2. at Indianapolis: Take I-465 South
     3. I-465 until exit 4 Harding Street (also Indiana State Road 37
           South, Bloomington, Martinsville).
     4. Follow 37 South for about 50 miles
     5. exit College Ave/Walnut Ave (the first Bloomington exit)
     6. Follow the College Ave. exit (there's only one way to go,
you'll be heading south on College Ave.) for a couple of miles.

Then:  If you are staying at the University Plaza hotel and want to
check in there first:
    7.  After you have taken the College Ave. exit, make a right turn
at the second stop light   (There will be a McDonalds on your left
where you turn.)  The University Plaza should be visible off of the
southwest corner of the intersection.  
    8.  After making a right turn, make a left turn at the next stop
light, and turn left again into the hotel.

Then:  To get to Jordan Hall from College Ave
     9.  Continue on College Ave south until 3rd Street

    10.  Make a left turn on 3rd Street.

    11.  Continue on 3rd Street.  After about 5 blocks 3rd street will
veer right in kind of a semicircle and becomes Atwater.  Follow
Atwater which is one-way. (If you end up at a stop light with a gas
station in front of you on your left, you're heading in the wrong
direction.)

    12.  Continue on Atwater until Faculty Ave. which is the first
block after the stop light where the Subway shop is.  

    13.  Make a left on Faculty Ave and then turn left into the big
parking garage.  (Street parking without a permit is allowed after 5pm
and on weekends.)

    14.  At the parking garage, take a ticket.  Park toward the top of
the building where there are no signs that say A-permits only.
(Parking is free on weekends and after a certain time on Friday nights
after the attendant leaves so you don’t have to pay when you leave
as long as you park toward the top.)

     15.  Jordan Hall is the building at the bottom of Faculty Dr.
When you wwalk out of the parking garage, just go down Faculty Dr,
cross 3rd Street and enter the building in front of you.  The talks
are in Jordan A100


Just in case, the linguistics department is on the 3rd floor of
Memorial Hall which is the castle-like building that will be to the
right (west) of Jordan Hall, immediately after a greenhouse.  The
departmental office is in room 322 and the office phone is (812)
855-6456.


Driving 2:  If you are coming on I-70 East from Illinois and want to
avoid Indianapolis, you can take 46 East from Terra Haute and follow
it for about an hour until you reach Bloomington (follow the
Bloomington sign when you are approaching Bloomington).  This becomes
17th Street.  
a.  If you are going to the University Plaza hotel, make a left on
Walnut and then a left at the next light.  You should see the hotel on
your left.  You will turn left at the light after that.  
b.  If you are going straight to campus, then make a right turn onto
College Ave. and then follow the directions from (9) above
