The Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages (IUHPFL) for High School Students will begin recruiting teaching staff for its summer Programs in France, Germany, Mexico and Spain for the summer of 2012 this fall.
What would my daily tasks as an IUHPFL instructor include?
- Each instructor teaches the same course to three different groups of students daily. The possible courses offered are conversation/communication, culture, grammar, linguistics/phonetics or literature. In addition, each instructor is also expected to lead a phonetics course or support group daily. Each instructor must develop his/her own course materials and will be asked to submit them electronically to the IUHPFL Office in early spring 2012.
- Each instructor leads an afternoon activity of choir or theater three days a week and sports once a week.
- Each instructor takes on a role of administering the IUHPFL abroad, the four roles being: student coordinator, financial coordinator, logistics coordinator, and public relations coordinator. Read more about these roles in the IUHPFL Staff Guidelines.
- Each instructor accompanies the students on several excursions to regional sites.
- The starting salary for IUHPFL instructors is $3,800. The Program covers transportation (both to and from the destination abroad as well as for Honors Program-related activities onsite), lodging, and instructor meals. Salary does not include personal expenses, travel expenses related to travel deviations to and from the destination abroad, or personal travel during the Program.
What makes me eligible to teach for the IUHPFL?
Consider application to the IUHPFL if…
- You are a graduate student or a core (not visiting) non-tenure-track faculty member (Lecturer) on Indiana University Bloomington's campus, or you are an experienced middle school or high school teacher in the state of Indiana. Preference will be given to IUB graduate students and core non-tenure-track faculty who plan to continue their career at IUB.
- You understand that any NTT faculty member with a visa must be able to re-enter the United States after the end of the IUHPFL and before the expiration date of his/her current visa.
- You can commit your time to extensive training sessions (a series of all-day workshops and group meetings) before going abroad, including Orientation, which will be taking place on a Saturday in April or May.
- You can demonstrate excellence in teaching.
- You are highly proficient in the target language.
- You consider yourself an excellent colleague to others, and possess the flexibility, patience, and open-mindedness to work closely and harmoniously with a team of two or three other instructors.
- You have the desire to work with high school students.
What materials do I need to submit for application as an IUHPFL instructor?
- Up-to-date Curriculum Vitae
- Cover letter in English that:
- outlines your teaching experience up to this point and how that teaching experience will make you a valuable instructor for the Program
- outlines how serving as an instructor in the IUHPFL will contribute to your overall professional goals
- indicates a basic understanding of the structure of the IUHPFL and its expectations of you as an instructor
- If you are not a graduate student or a core (not visiting) non-tenure-track faculty member (Lecturer) on Indiana University Bloomington's campus, you will need to submit a DVD with a recording of you teaching one of your class periods.
Curriculum Vitae and cover letter should be submitted to iuhpfl@indiana.edu, and should be directed to the attention of Stephanie M. Goetz, Managing Director, Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages. Once making initial contact with the IUHPFL Managing Director, potential interviews and class visits may be set up, and additional application materials may be required. DVD teaching samples should be mailed to: Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages, Attention: Instructor Recruitment, 111 S. Jordan Ave., Bloomington, IN 47405-7799.
The IUHPFL will begin accepting application materials for open instructor positions beginning October 3, 2011. Interested instructors are asked to submit application materials by November 7, 2011. Final decisions regarding IUHPFL staffing for 2012 will be made by the end of the fall semester.
What would I need to know before applying to the IUHPFL as an instructor?
- As a potential instructor for the Program, you should be familiar with the following:
- Interested IUHPFL instructors are encouraged to dialogue with former and veteran IUHPFL instructors to understand the time commitment, effort and energy level required of them as a Program instructor, both in the pre-departure process and while onsite.
- Upon applying for the IUHPFL, interested instructors will be asked to confirm that they are not applying for other spring/summer positions that would prevent them from meeting their obligations as an IUHPFL instructor.
