Know your Campus Event at Wylie House – Outreach & Advocacy Committee

Two tours were offered at Wylie House on Thursday, May 14.  Turnout for last week’s tour was good, and positive comments were received for both the Wylie House tour and the program in general.  Today an open house will take place until 7:00 pm at the IIDC.  A tour of IUB’s cultural centers is planned for July.

IT Policy Draft for Review:  ISPP-25 Information Governance

Last month the BPC voted to approve the policy draft.  However, there were other groups that did not approve it as written.  Another draft should be forthcoming.

President’s Letter to Supervisors

A letter of support from President McRobbie was sent out to supervisors of all continuing and incoming BPC members.  In addition, each member should have received a copy of the letter.  It is our plan to get these letters sent out immediately after the BPC election each year.

New Business

Monroe Bank Retirement Seminar

Dan Ondrik attended the presentation last week, which lasted about three hours.  It was good to hear an outside perspective, keeping in mind that one of the objectives at a seminar of this type is to sell product.  There was some good background information provided, and the program discussed not only retirement planning but also estate planning.

BPC Officer Candidates

The annual election of BPC officers will take place at the July business meeting.  Dan reminded everyone that the only restriction for any position is that of BPC President – that person must have had at least one year of service on the Council prior to his/her serving in that capacity.  All members are urged to consider running for office.

Blue Ribbon Committee on Healthcare

CWA has asked the BPC to endorse a letter to President McRobbie asking for more representation across the university on the Blue Ribbon Committee on Healthcare.  The Executive Committee sees the Blue Ribbon Committee as a group of individuals who are involved in the healthcare industry in one capacity or another.  Therefore, they did not think it necessarily appropriate to ask for a seat on this committee.  They believe it would be better for the BPC to get involved after recommendations from the committee have been made.  Dan will pose the following questions to Dan Rives, who serves as ex-officio on this committee:  1) How will employees be informed of recommendations?  2) How can employee groups respond after recommendations are made, or will they be able to respond?

As a side note, Jonathan Bolte reported that results of a recent unscientific BPC poll show that of 189 respondents, 87% said they would rather pay more to keep their current healthcare benefits than to cut costs.  Jonathan will continue to place poll questions on healthcare in upcoming newsletters.  He would also like to see a forum on healthcare set up on the BPC website – a project to be considered by the next Communications and Marketing Committee.

The PI Committee is beginning to look into the development of a professional mentoring program (hopefully in collaboration with the OWA).  To begin with, we will find a way to recruit volunteer mentors – primarily for new professionals at IUB, both from inside and outside the IU system, and from other ranks in the system.  Hopefully, we can be as simple as offering a website with mentor photos, autobiographies, statements, and other important details and rely on the new staff to reach out to us.  Over time, we will implement a more formal program with a targeted and intentional outreach to new professionals.

Search and Screen/Review Committees

Search – Vice Provost for Student Affairs & Dean of Students – Margaret Baechtold

The search was finished at the end of April.  As of today’s date, no decision has been announced.
