Can military intervention bring about democracy in another country? Can
liberal democratic institutions and ideals be exported? Can weak and
failing states be reconstructed by the international community? What
are the prospects in Iraq and Afghanistan? With what consequences for
those countries and for international security?
Join political economist Christopher Coyne for a discussion of
alternatives to military intervention—in particular, free trade as
a
means to bring about a more peaceful world if not Western-style
democracy.
Coyne is the author of two books, After War: The Political Economy of
Exporting Democracy and Media, Development, and Institutional
Change,
and many book chapters and articles. He is an editorial board member
for the Journal of Private Enterprise and the North American
editor for
The Review of Austrian Economics. His many positions and honors
including being named the F.A. Hayek Fellow at the London School of
Economics and Political Science and a Distinguished Scholar at the
Center for the Study of Political Economy at Hampden-Sydney College.
Coyne is on campus as a guest of the School of Public and Environmental
Affairs (SPEA) and will be speaking on Monday,
February 1, 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on "The Political Economy of Exporting
Democracy" in the Tavis Smiley Atrium of the SPEA building.
