Discussion Supper with Ahmad Cleaver, Author of Soul on Islam
Monday, March 24, 2008 * 5:30-7 p.m.
* Harlos House, 1331 E. Tenth Street
Mr. Cleaver is the son of Eldridge and Kathleen
Cleaver, activists in America’s civil rights movement and for a time
members of the Black Panther Party. In 1968, while in prison, Eldridge
Cleaver wrote a book of essays titled Soul on Ice and later a book
called Soul on Fire. Ahmad Cleaver’s book, Soul on Islam,
begins with an account of his life with his parents, including time spent
in France, the United States, and Algeria, where he was born and his
father spent time in exile, but in greater part is an account of his own
spiritual search and conversion to Islam. In an interview he said he
wrote his book for non-Muslims, especially post-9/11 America, as a means
to explain the real message of Islam and to promote better understanding.
Ahmad Cleaver graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Africana
Studies and Research. For more than a decade, he has traveled among
Muslims in countries within Africa and the Arabian Peninsula and has been
studying Arabic and the teachings of Islam under Imams in America, Sudan,
Kuwait, and Qatar.
