During the past several years, polls conducted abroad suggest the regard for the United States has declined among its traditional friends as well as in some countries with whom it has more testing relationships. The Pew Research Center reports improvement in 2005; but notes “the United States remains broadly disliked in most countries surveyed.

From the humanitarian crisis in Darfur to the challenge of nuclear proliferation in Iran, what should be the role of the United States in the world?

Whatever your major, the workshop will give you an opportunity to consider the use of American power and influence to advance democracy and other interests, to protect international and its own security, and to respond to pressing humanitarian needs. A student/faculty committee has designed the workshop to give participants the means to learn, discuss, and reach some conclusions so please check your calendar before responding to this invitation to ensure you can attend both sessions.

Participating in the workshop will be special guest JOACHIM KRAUSE, director of the Institute for Security Policy at the University of Kiel and professor for international relations at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Germany. Professor Krause is a member of the Council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, described as “the world’s most important think tank dealing with security affairs.” He has served as a member of the German delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in 1988-89 and a member of the Tokyo Forum for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament in 1998-99, as well as in many other important international roles. He will be on campus as a Distinguished Citizen Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study. IU faculty participating include ROBERTO GARCIA, clinical professor of international business in the Kelley School of Business Department of Management; BARBARA KLINGER, associate professor and director of Film and Media Resources in the Department of Communication and Culture; and JEAN ROBINSON, professor of political science.
