One of the most popular operas of all times, La Bohème
tells the bittersweet stories of young artists, writers, friends, and
lovers in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1830s. Adapted from Henri
Murger's La Vie de la Bohème (Scenes from Bohemian Life),
which also inspired the musical RENT and the Academy Award-winning
movie Moulin Rouge!, the opera was composed by Giacomo Puccini,
whose extraordinarily beautiful music captures the gaiety of Bohemian café
life, as well as the excitement, jealousy, and sadness that passionate
love can bring.
This production will feature a new set designed by C. David Higgins, chair
of the Jacobs School of Music Department of Opera Studies, and a master
scenic artist and staff designer for the IU Opera Theater. Higgins’
designs have brought life to numerous opera productions throughout the
United States and abroad. Join us for a 6:30 p.m. pre-performance talk
with Higgins to hear about the creative processes involved in this opera
production and then enjoy the best seats in the house for a performance of
this much-loved opera.
