Producer, writer, and director Julie Dash is well-known for her work on
feature-length and short films
and music videos. Her award-winning film Daughters of the Dust was
placed in the National Film
Registry by the Library of Congress and is one of 400 American films
honored and preserved as a National
Treasure. Her long-form, dramatic films include the MTV original feature
Love Song, romantic
thriller Incognito (with Richard T. Jones and Vanessa Williams,
among others), and Funny
Valentines (with Alfre Woodard, Loretta Devine, and CCH Pounder). She
has directed music videos
featuring, among others, blues artist Keb 'Mo, R&B and soul singer Peabo
Bryson, the a cappella ensemble
Sweet Honey in the Rock, and singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, including
Chapman's "Give Me One Reason,"
a hit single that won the 1997 Grammy for Best Rock Song. Join Dash for a
discussion of filmmaking, and
of what motion pictures mean to her and to you. The lunch is co-sponsored
by the Wells Scholars
Program.
Dash will be visiting campus as part of the IU Libraries'
"Reel Images" project. She will speak at the opening event on
Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 4:30 p.m. at
IU's Neal-Marshall Grand Hall. She will also host a public screening of
her film "The Rosa Parks Story"
on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. This CBS
Networked Television Movie has
garnered numerous accolades, including an Emmy nomination for Angela
Bassett, who portrays Rosa Parks in
the film.
