What is Väsen? Väsen is a Swedish acoustic band that weaves
together rock, jazz, traditional, and classical influences, "with modern
attitude. It is brilliant musicians who make music that is soulful,
playful, and regularly virtuosic. Performing at this year's Lotus World
Music and Arts Festival, Väsen will join students for a lunch hosted
by
the Hutton Honors College and Wells Scholars Program that will offer a
sample of the group's music and a chance to talk with musicians Mikael
Marin (on viola), Roger Tallroth (on 12-string guitar), and Olov Johansson
(on nyckelharpa, the keyed fiddle that gives Väsen its signature
sound). Together since 1989, Väsen has toured on several continents
and produced 12 CDs, including its 2005 Live in Japan. Johansson, Marin,
and Tallroth have also performed as soloists; played with groups and
individuals that include the Kronos Quartet, conductor Leonard Bernstein,
and the rock/folk group Nordman; and composed music for themselves and
others.
