The Real World of EspionageDiscussion Supper with Former CIA Operative and
SPEA Professor Gene Coyle An IU alumnus, Gene Coyle entered the CIA in 1976 and spent some 13 of his 30 years with the Agency working abroad undercover in various countries, including Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil, and Greece. He began teaching at IU in 2004 as an overt employee under an academic outreach program of the CIA. He retired from the Agency in spring 2006 and became an adjunct professor in the School of Public and Envioronmental Affairs, where he will continue teaching courses on the history of intelligence and its role in U.S. foreign policy. He is the author of a spy novel, The Dream Merchant of Lisbon, and has written several articles for the CIA's Studies in Intelligence journal. What are the techniques and psychology used to recruit spies in the real world? How does the Hollywood version of espionage differ from the real world experience? Professor Coyle will address these and other questions, as well as the impact of intelligence work in history and in the post-September 11 world. |
