Shakespeare's Macbeth is a classic tale of personal and political ambition, corruption, and murder in a time of war and violence. Join us for a night at the theater that starts with a light supper with Associate Vice Chancellor Ray Smith, who will lead a pre-performance discussion, with particular attention to so-called "gendered behavior" and evil in the play. Do we associate Lady Macbeth with the diabolical? How are we to react when a male serial killer utters the most beautiful of poetry? Professor Smith has taught Shakespeare at IU and elsewhere for more than 20 years. His research treats special speeches (curses, oaths, and prayers) in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama that involve the invocation of the supernatural.
