The Lotus World Music Festival has been described as "one of the best things about Bloomington." September 22 to 25, downtown streets will be filled with everything from Brazilian acoustic to Afro-pop to funk and flamenco. One of this year's featured Lotus performers is American Tim Eriksen, an amazingly versatile musician who has performed and recorded hardcore punk rock, as well as Bosnian popular and traditional music, and is "recognized as one of America's finest young traditional balladeers." At a lunch co-sponsored by the Hutton Honors College and the Wells Scholars Program, the focus will be on a form of American folk music from earlier times, called shape-note or Sacred Harp singing, that Tim Eriksen and others performed in the movie Cold Mountain, a movie set in the time of the American Civil War. (In shape-note music, each note of the musical scale is given a distinct shape, e.g., triangle, diamond, square). The music was featured at the 2004 Academy Awards ceremony as the movie and its actors were nominated for many Academy Awards. Mr. Eriksen may teach us a bit of shape-note singing at the lunch, but the conversation can range as widely as his music and your interests. For a full listing of Lotus World Music Festival events, please check out the Lotus Web site.
