J. Baird Callicott, a professor of philosophy at the University of
North Texas, is a pioneer in the teaching of environmental ethics, having
created the first course on the subject in 1971 at the University of
Wisconsin. He has written extensively on a wide range of topics, from
Native American views on the environment to sport hunting to ecosystem
health, including books on Earth's Insights: A Multicultural Survey
of Ecological Ethics from the Mediterranean Basin to the Australian
Outback and In Defense of the Land Ethic: Essays in Environmental
Philosophy.
He has edited or co-edited Environmental Philosophy: From Animal Rights
to Radical Ecology; Nature in Asian Traditions of Thought: Essays in
Comparative Environmental Philosophy; The Great New Wilderness
Debate; and other books. The discussion at the lunch may range as
widely as your interests do. The lunch is co-sponsored by the Wells
Scholars Program.
Professor Callicott's visit to campus is
sponsored by The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American
Institutions. He will deliver a public talk on "Naturalizing the Boundary
Between Humanity and Nature" on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. in Ballantine
