Using frank discussion and examples of visual imagery, Natalia
Deeb-Sossa and Matt Ezzell, anti-violence educators, rape crisis
advocates, and doctoral candidates in sociology at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, will discuss the state of sex and gender in our
cultural landscape and the messages transmitted through mainstream
advertising and mainstream pornography about men and women, sexuality, and
race. They ask, What messages are being sold to us? Where do they come
from? How do they affect us? What should we do? Their talk, which is
free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Center for Research on
Concepts and Cognition; the Dean of the Faculties and Vice Chancellor for
Academic Affairs; the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of
Students; the Hutton Honors College; the Wells Scholars Program; the
Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction; and the
departments of anthropology, gender studies, and sociology at Indiana
University Bloomington.
