IU undergraduates pay a flat fee for tuition, which entitles them to register for 12 to 17 credit hours per semester. Most degree programs require students to average 15.5 credit hours per semester in order to graduate in the traditional eight semesters. Tuition and fees are set by the Trustees of Indiana University.

International students have different tuition, fees, and other expenses.

Determining Residency Status and Tuition Rates

IU is a state-funded public university, so in-state students and out-of-state students pay different rates for tuition. For tuition purposes, initial residency status is determined by the information you provide on your application for admission.

• U.S. citizens or permanent residents under 21 years old generally qualify for in-state tuition if at least one of their parents or legal guardians resides in Indiana.
• Students who are 21 or older are eligible for in-state tuition after they have been physically present in Indiana for at least 12 months for a predominant purpose other than higher education.
