Since 1995, the Center for International Education and Development Assistance (CIEDA) at Indiana University has managed USIA-sponsored programs to place mid-career Southern and South African professionals in internships in the US. Under the South African Internship Program (SAIP), CIEDA has placed over 200 professionals from South Africa in cities across the United States. Under the Southern Africa Regional Program (SARIP), CIEDA placed 24 interns from Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. The programs, which were designed as eight-week professional internships, have three general objectives:

Participants for this program typically ranged in age from 25 to 45 years old with a minimum of three years professional experience. The results these programs have produced have been astounding. Program participants have been extremely successful in not only effecting change in their home country, but also in maintaining long-term relationships (personal and professional) with their U.S. hosts.
