Acquiring English language skills is a prerequisite to success in
pursuing professional development and university-level study in
the United States. Three
IU campuses offer formal programs of instruction in
English-as-a-second language (ESL) and
English-for-academic-purposes ranging from beginning to advanced
levels. In addition, programs are available for delivery abroad or
at an IU campus in technical and business English communication;
these courses can be customized for clients to include
industry-specific vocabularies
As
an example of IU's offerings, the Center for English Language
Training (CELT) on the Bloomington campus conducts six terms of
instruction each year. Each term meets five days a week (with a
total of 23 hours of classroom instruction per week) for seven
weeks. In addition,
CELT offers seven levels of language instruction, testing and
language placement, a variety of elective classes, field trips,
computer assisted instruction and TOEFL preparation and practice
tests as well as custom-designed language and orientation programs
for sponsored groups. Similarly, the ELS Language Center at IUPUI
offers intensive instruction at five levels, TOEFL preparation,
university placement services, and summer programs in Business
Communications. IU-Bloomington also offers post-graduate degrees
in applied linguistics and the teaching of English to speakers of
other languages (TESOL).
