Five area studies programs at IU have achieved recognition as
federally funded National Resources Centers for Russia and Eastern
Europe, Western Europe, Central Eurasia, East Asia, and Africa.
Other noteworthy IU programs focus on Latin America, the
Middle East, and India. Several
of the area studies centers have developed joint degree programs
with IU professional schools.
The
outstanding quality of IU's area studies programs has been due to
a strong emphasis on foreign language study.
More than 50 different languages are offered at IU as
regular courses, some not being taught anywhere else in the US.
Two prestigious intensive language programs are held each
summer: The East Asian Summer Language Institute for Japanese,
Chinese, and Korean; and the Summer Workshop in Slavic and East
European Languages where many less commonly taught languages like
Estonian, Turkmen, and Uzbek are offered along with Russian,
Polish, Czech, Slovene, and Serbian and Croatian.
