InULA President's Report
May 22, 2006
This year there were some new initiatives and some revivals of previous programs. New this year was the Endowments Task Force, recommended by Erika Dowell last year and appointed this year to look at ways InULA can put our money to work. Erika chaired this task force, and presented a report for our discussion at the Annual Business Meeting. This report needs to be studied and acted upon by the Executive Board.
Back with us again after a hiatus of a few years is InULA Notes on the web. Thanks to Emily Okada, co-chair of the Communications Committee, the editor of the newsletter, we have had one issue so far this year and look forward to some of your contributions in future issues. Our Web site is being redesigned, with help from a graduate student who has been working with the Communications Committee this year, and that should be finished by the end of Bloomington's first summer session. It is also in need of updating, and that will be worked on after the redesign is implemented.
We took on some charitable contributions to worthy causes this year. Last fall the Board decided to answer the call to contribute to the American Library Association's Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. This money is being used to help rebuild libraries in the Gulf area affected by the devastation of the hurricane. We also made contributions this year to the Ohio Valley Technical Services Librarians conference and to the Midwest Archives Conference, both of which met in Bloomington. Our Program and Social Committee created a gift basket at the request of the Indiana Library Federation, as a fund raiser during the ILF annual conference in April. Program and Social, thanks to co-chairs Lou Malcomb and Diane Dallis, also arranged for us to hold the annual business meeting by telecomm. This was highly successful in that more members from the campuses were able to attend this year.
We had one book sale this year; the Indianapolis sale did not take place, but the Bloomington sale netted $7787 to fund scholarships and grants.
Certainly one of the most important things we do in keeping with our mission is to award grants and scholarships to IU librarians and SLIS students, respectively. The Scholarship and Grants Committee has been very busy this year, since we had a number of grant applications and a rich pool of scholarship applications. The following people received awards this year:
Research Incentive Funds:
Kristi Palmer/Emily Dill. "Surveying Librarian Attitudes about Changes in Scholarly Communication." Amount funded: $800.00
David Lasocki. A Higher Fusion: The New Orleans Modern-Jazz Group Astral Project at 27. Amount funded: $500.00
Angela Courtney. Australia and America: A Cross Cultural Survey. Amount funded: $500.00
Lou Malcomb. Teaching Government Information in the 21st Century Electronic Environment. Amount funded: $400.00
Moira Smith, to present a paper, "Practical Jokes and the Dark Side of Humor." Amount funded: $1420.
Taemin Park, to present a paper, "Authorship from the Asia and Pacific Region in Top Library and Information Science Journals." Amount funded: $800.
Julie Elliott (though Julie also won the White Award and declined ours)
Professional Development Grant:
IUB Libraries' Library Instruction Committee, Diane Dallis, chair, to present a program on methods, success stories, frustrations that accompany teaching the use of OneSearch to students and faculty. Amount funded: $100.
Julieann V. Nilson Scholarship Awards:
We were pleased to award three SLIS scholarships of $1000 each, to Keithia Longworth, Mary D. Kraeszig, and Willow Cataldo Reynolds.
Finishing terms on the Board this summer are Monique Threatt, Secretary, and Sally Neal, Member at Large. I want to thank them both for their excellent service in these roles. Another thank-you is due to Kirsten Leonard, one of our members, who audited our accounts last summer.
The results of this year's election are:
Monique Threatt, Vice President/President-Elect
Kirsten Leonard, Secretary
Vincci Kwong, Member At-Large
I have truly enjoyed working with the Board and committees as your President this year, and I thank you all for your work and dedication to InULA's mission.
