The International Studies major in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University,
Bloomington is an excellent choice for students who are
interested in
meeting the unprecedented challenges of the 21st century, challenges
which require that all of us have greater knowledge of social, political and economic global
issues as well as the languages and cultures of the world.
Major requirements are
broadly constructed to allow flexibility as well as
depth. Courses for the major are organized in five parts - three
introductory or
core courses, three
electives in one of six
thematic concentrations, (Culture and the Arts, Global
Health and Environment, Global Integration and Development, Human Rights and Social Movements, International Communication,
and Nations, States and Boundaries), three electives in one regional concentration, and
a language requirement. Overseas study or an internship with an international
dimension is required as well as a senior capstone project or thesis.
Currently the program enrolls over 300 majors making it among the largest majors in the College of Arts and Sciences. Majors are more likely than the average Indiana University student to be involved in service-learning as part of their education, are twice as likely to double major and four times more likely to triple major.
Alumni are employed at major corporations in the U.S. and abroad, work with NGOs throughout the world and are more likely than their peers to enter graduate or professional school. The program is especially proud of the relatively large percentage of its students that upon graduation enter the Peace Corps.
