STARTALK -
SIPHUR
Summer Intensive Program for Hindi and Urdu |
STARTALK-SIPHUR 2011 is a free three-week summer intensive program for Hindi and Urdu that runs from June 27 to July 15, 2011. The summer intensive program is a residential program targeted at high school students and a few college students of Indian/Pakistani heritage; particularly students who already have oral and aural skills of the target language. Our participants consist of new and returning students, and are equally represented by heritage and non-heritage students and by gender. We had students from nine different states last year and we are expecting to have students from many more states this year.
The instructional goals of the program are for the students to acquire linguistic and cultural competency in order to communicate successfully, and acquire other learning strategies and skills through learning a foreign language. The goals of our program are aligned with the goals outlined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st century, focusing on the three modes of communication, as well as connection, culture, comparison, and community (the 5 Cs). Class instruction will be student-centered learning and standards-based instruction. Our program will also differentiate curriculum and instruction to accommodate a range of learners with different linguistic and cultural competencies, backgrounds and ages. Curricular contents will be drawn from various disciplines which will help students broaden their perspectives and expand their knowledge.
STARTALK-SIPHUR 2011 is composed of four components: in-class instruction during the day, afternoon extra-curricular activities, evening culture classes and Saturday field-trips. There will also be voluntary study group meetings later in the evening.

In-class Instruction
For our in-class instruction there will be three levels in Hindi and Urdu: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. (Students will be placed through assessments taken at the beginning of the program.)
Extra-Curricular Activities
Extra-curricular activities were new additions last year and received a very good response. Extra-curricular activities are designed to give students a chance to do more in-depth research on a specific subject that is closely related to in-class language instruction. There will be several clubs under the extra-curricular activities such as Bandhanwar, Thali & Rangoli, Drama, Film songs and Poetry.
Culture Classes
Culture classes consist of yoga, dance and music through which students learn the arts of the target country. (We will bring in instructors from the local Indian/Pakistani community.)
Weekly Field Trip
A weekly field trip is a requisite component of our program through which students are exposed to religious and cultural aspects of the target countries. (list of places TBA)
Scholarships and Credits
Students accepted into STARTALK–SIPHUR 2011 will receive a STARTALK scholarship of $ 1,600 which will be used to pay for tuition fees and room & board. Participants will receive two college credits upon completion of the program.
