Major: Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies

Erin Chapman traveled to Ayacucho, Peru, in 2009 to work with the human rights and legal advocacy organization Paz y Esperanza (Peace and Hope), which works to preserve historical memory and address human rights abuses in the wake of the conflict between the Peruvian armed forces and the Shining Path.

"I went with a team to Putis, a small mountain village that was the site of the largest execution during the civil war," Erin says. "Our organization was working to build a memorial on the site and to purchase coffins for each of the victims. I went with them to take pictures and to talk to village members about the memorial, and my work was included in Paz's newsletter."

Erin has also studied abroad in Geneva, Switzerland, where she learned about the role international organizations like the United Nations play in international conflict resolution. After college she hopes to pursue a career in international human rights law or foreign policy.
