What Are the Goals of the ICP?

The ICP brings together teams of English as a second language (ESL) specialists, ESL teachers, and content teachers to provide a more equitable education for students learning English as a second language in Indiana.

Teachers participating in the ICP attend professional development workshops and complete three graduate level courses in ESL theory, methodology, and assessment provided on-line and through video-conferencing from Indiana University Bloomington. The ICP assists content and English as a second language (ESL) teachers in the development of a collaborative teaching model that focuses on planning an integrated curriculum which helps students learn subject matter, as well as English.

Upon completing their professional development training, ICP teacher teams will employ researched-based ESL instructional methods and alternative assessment methods in their culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, and they will provide professional development workshops and serve as collaborative mentors and trainers to other teachers in their school corporations.

Teachers in the program will develop videos demonstrating content-integrated instruction to share with other educators through a web-based, on-line learning forum. Additionally, the ICP will develop a library of both student and teacher resource materials which will be available to participating school corporations and other professional organizations and educational agencies.
