Course Description

Families and Health (HPER F656) explores various aspects of the relationship between families and health. It can be taken as a three-credit, graduate course or as a non-credit course. The intent is to bring together graduate students and individuals actively involved in some aspect of family or health to create a synergy of scholarship and practice.

Five areas will be covered in the course: families and health as a system, the family/healthcare interface, vulnerability and resilience in the family, dealing with loss, and health promotion in the context of family. Class members will participate in discussion on the class conferencing system, and will work in collaborative small groups to build components for the course website.

The website for this course is comparatively simple as we begin the semester, and will be further developed throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, we will have worked together to develop the site so that it can serve as a web resource on families and health. It will be linked to the home page of the Department of Applied Health Science. Class participants will be identified as having participated in the site development process and will be given byline credit for elements that they have written.

This course is offered completely over the internet, using the capabilities of the World Wide Web and a variety of communication formats, including private (one-to-one) e-mail, an e-mail distribution list, and, a web-based group conference.

Families and Health has been approved by the National Council on Family Relations for 4.5 Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) CEUs. If you are interested in becoming a certified family life educator, visit the National Council on Family Relations home page.

Course Goals

This course is intended to meet the following goals:

* to expand the knowledge base of participants in class as to the nature of the relationship between family and health;
* to create a community of scholars and practitioners, unimpeded by geography;
* to contribute to the fields of family studies and health education through a fully developed website that brings information from the two fields together; and
* to provide opportunities for electronic publication to class participants.

Content Clusters

this course is comprised of a free-standing preparatory (pre) unit and five content clusters. Each of the content clusters is scheduled to run three weeks in the semester. The clusters are sequenced in the following way:
* Preparation for Class--Using the Internet--complete before the first cluster
* Wks. 1-3, Custer 1 -- Health, Illness and the Family
* Wks. 4-6, Custer 2 -- The Family/Health Care Interface
* Wks. 7-9, Custer 3 -- Vulnerability and Resilience in the Family
* Wks. 10-12, Custer 4 -- Dealing with Loss
* Wks. 13-15, Custer 5 -- Health Promotion in the Context of Family

Readings

The readings for this class will be drawn from various locations on the internet, most of them on the World Wide Web. In addition, efforts are currently being made to make other readings available electronically.

Tuition and Fees

* Registering for credit or non-credit -- $441.00

Course Expectations

* All students are expected to participate actively in class discussion on the COW and to provide a substantial contribution to the site development for all content clusters.

* Students interested in continuing education credits must successfully complete the post test at the end of each content cluster.

* Students taking the course for credit must write a brief (5-8 page) culminating paper that draws families and health together.

Technological Needs for this Course

This course will be conducted entirely over the World Wide Web and via E-mail. For these, you will need:

* A computer with which to access the World Wide Web
* An Internet connection
* A WWW browser (e.g., Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Lynx--since the pages were formatted with Netscape, it is the recommended browser)
* The ability to send and receive e-mail
* The ability to upload and download files from the WWW
* The ability to send and receive files

Although class members will be involved in the development of web-based documents, knowledge of HTML, while helpful, is not necessary.

At some time before the beginning of class, everyone involved with the course will receive a password for the course conferencing site. We will also set up off-campus students with an IU Network ID (which allows access to a variety of IU electronic services). This ID will be necessary to access some of the functions of the course.

Because technical problems often are unique to the system you use, the professor will be unable to answer questions about technical matters. We encourage you to contact your service provider. Here at IU, this is the University Instructional Technology Services (UITS) Support Center at 812-855-6789 or ucshelp@indiana.edu. If you have problems with the class conferencing site, contact Steve Malikowski at smalikow@indiana.edu

If you have problems during the semester that may affect your ability to participate in the class, please let us know. We will work with you to help you finish.

Contact the Professor

Families and Health will be limited in size. All prospective students must contact the professor and receive permission to enroll in the course.

After receiving permission, students currently enrolled at Indiana University-Bloomington may register in this course, using the 4-digit section number listed in the Schedule of Classes.

Students who are not currently enrolled at IU-B, and are attending other universities and colleges or are enrolled at other IU campuses, should first discuss with appropriate individuals on their campus whether or not this course will transfer to their institution. Then, they should contact the professor for permission to register for the course.

Students who are interested in taking the course who are not enrolled in a degree program may also enroll in the off-campus students' sections. Contact the instructor for permission to register.

This course was developed with the help of a grant from the Alliance for Continuing Education.

To request permission to register or for further information, contact the course developer and instructor, Kathleen Gilbert, at gilbertk@indiana.edu.
