Note that deadlines are on the activites.html page

Kathleen R. Gilbert, Ph.D., course instructor

Private information to your DGL. The DGL (discussion group leader) is the person who leads discussion in your small group.  At the beginning of the semester, you will need to send an e-mail to the DGL to whose group you are assigned.  You will get this person's e-mail addresses in class during the second class session, when you are assigned into groups. In this e-mail, indicate your name, address and phone number. Also, we would like to know where you will be accessing the computer (e.g., home, on campus, at a public non-university site, etc.) and what you are particularly interested in learning from this class. Completion of this task is worth 5 points.

Draw your family. Click on the link to see the details of this assignment. Can not be turned in late. This is worth 10 points.

Family Analysis. In this assignment, you are to answer a series of questions on life in your family, from your perspective. Because of family diversity, we provide 30 questions, although you only need to answer 15. Click on the link for more information. Late penalty if turned in after end of class on date for which it is assigned. Worth up to 30 points with a small opportunity for bonus points.

Family interview. Occasionally, in a class like this one, you will find yourself thinking about what other people in your family (e.g., your parents, siblings, grandparents, spouse) might react to the information shared in class. Or you might wonder about their family experiences, for example, how your grandparents worked out their differences when they were first married or how your parents dealt with being first-time parents. Maybe you want to know how your sibling dealt with the sibling rivalry in your family. This class project gives you the opportunity to ask those questions. Click on the Family interview link for more information. Late penalty if turned in after end of class on date for which it is assigned. Worth up to 30 points with a small opportunity for bonus points.

Write a letter  Click on the link to see the details of this assignment. Due in class; can not be turned in late. This is worth 10 points.

"Reel" family system analysis. Also called "Putting it all together," this activity is intended to help you see that the information in this class can be applied to "real life" families as you find connections among the different elements in this class. You will look at a "reel life" (film) or stage family and analyze what you see in relation to information from this class. Click on the Family system analysis assignment link for more information. Late penalty if turned in after end of class on date for which it is assigned. Worth up to 30 points with a small opportunity for bonus points.

Genogram. This assignment is to make a 3 generation genogram, with identifying information and relationship lines. It also requires a five item chronology. This is due in class and can not be turned in late. Be sure to print out the grading sheet. It is worth 20 points.

Article Facilitation. In your discussion groups, sign up to lead discussion on one of the articles from the Gilbert reader. Your responsibilities will be to: Provide your group members with a one paragraph summary of the article; have at least 5 discussion questions related to the article ready; Facilitate discussion using your questions. Try to get group members talking. Pick controversial or interesting points in the article to focus on. This discussion should last 15 to 20 minutes, so you may want to plan for more than enough questions. Instead of, or in addition to questions, you may want to do some sort of creative activity for your group if that fits for the article (i.e. drawing, taking a quiz, debate, etc.). Bottom line--Be creative! Ask your discussion leader for help if needed. This is worth 10 points.

Volunteer in Community. You may volunteer at an agency or for a program for which you can demonstrate a link to the course and/or course content. Four hours of documented volunteer service is equal to one point. Students must have the site approved BEFORE they volunteer and may earn up to 10 points.
