The Hudson & Holland Scholars Program (HHSP) has served the campus of Indiana University for the past 20 years and is a unique program in its mission and goals. Our mission is to recruit, retain, and graduate students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to academic success and social justice. Although the program is race- conscious, we are not race-exclusive. HHSP currently supports over 700 scholars from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Approximately ninety-percent of our students are African American, Hispanic, and Native American, with the remaining ten-percent comprised of Asian, Caucasian, and other ethnicities (seventy-percent Indiana residents and thirty-percent out-of-state). HHSP not only assists undergraduates seeking their first baccalaureate degree through scholarship support, but also invests in the holistic development of students: academically, personally, and professionally. Program expectations are designed to place students on a productive and shorter path to success.
Hudson & Holland is not a scholarship, but a scholarship program. Hudson & Holland adopts a holistic student development philosophy, one focusing on the well-roundedness of scholars. This is accomplished through our required L.E.A.D. initiative, which involves a Freshman Seminar, advising sessions, conference and workshops, post-baccalaureate preparation, service and/or social justice components, internships, and a collaborative mentor program. Additionally, the newly launched HoPSS (Holistic Philosophy for Scholar Success) initiative which focuses on the health and wellness of students. This combination makes HHSP the strongest and most comprehensive scholarship and support program in the Indiana University system, and we dare say across the country, in terms of retention and preparation of students. We retain above 90% of our students and graduate between 85 - 88% of our students, rates which far exceed the all-university rates of 69%. Twenty-five percent of our students maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and higher. High standards, coupled with a supportive scholarship program, are keys to the success of our scholars.
To further instill the understanding, “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required,” Hudson & Holland encourages our scholars to participate in overseas study programs. The Program provides a summer overseas study opportunity for our students to travel to Ghana, West Africa. Over the years, this program has seared in the minds of our scholars the need to succeed in every area of life in order to open doors for others.
I welcome you to view what we are accomplishing at HHSP. Please feel free to peruse our site. You will learn more about program history, policies and procedures, requirements, and the many opportunities afforded Hudson & Holland scholars through campus and external partnerships.
