June 6
05-23: Crusades
Despite the politics, culture wars, and zealotry that ran rampant during the
Crusades, the conflict indirectly resulted in a musical exchange between cultures
that had a profound effect on European medieval music. Also, two new releases
from violinist John Holloway.
June 13
05-24: Secret Societies/Secret names
Move over, DaVinci Code! Secrecy and exclusivity were highly prized virtues
throughout early history, and musicians were in the thick of it! Also -- Romantics
tune in! We'll be sampling a new recording on the topic of Tristan and Isolda,
from the ensemble Istampitta.
June 20
05-25: Tromba Marina
So what is a Tromba Marina? Interesting, unprofitable, and questionable instruments
will be the focus. Think of it as an instrumental "survival of the fittest!"
Also, a new release of Overtures for the Hamburg Opera featuring the Akademie
fur Alte Musik Berlin.
June 27
05-26
What is it that lets us describe a piece or a performance as "early music?"
That's the question on Harmonia this week. We'll hear diverse answers from
musicologists who define the term for us; and we'll hear a sampling of Tafelmusik's
new rendition of a Beethoven Symphony on period instruments.
