No prerequisites are assumed for Election 2006, but Y103, Introduction to American Government, or the equivalent, would be a helpful background. The course does assume that you are interested in politics, though if not, hopefully the class can fulfill something like a "politics appreciation" function. After all, most of you will be bombarded with election news and campaign advertising at least every other year for the rest of your lives--you might as well learn to appreciate what some call "democracy's feast."

The structure of the course is

  • The character of American electoral politics: parties and alignments.
  • Looking back: The 2004 Presidential Election.
  • Congressional and state election (2006)
  • Elections and governing: Do elections matter?

The class format will be lecture with a lot of discussion, small group work, guest speakers, video clips, and a couple of films.  There will be three exams and four short exercises.
