Born and raised in Siegen, Germany, Carsten attended the University of Münster (WWU) from 1997-2003 before receiving his Diploma in Chemistry. At WWU he performed undergraduate research in the research group of Prof. Karl Cammann and Dr. Wolfgang Buscher on developing instrumentation for electrothermal vaporization microwave induced plasma optical emission spectrometry. He received his Dr. rer. nat. degree majoring in analytical chemistry in 2007. His graduate studies were mainly focused on developing alternative plasma sources for ICPs. The so-called SHIP torch reduced the total argon consumption of conventional ICPs by 95% and was applied to the analysis of doped luminescent nanoparticles. He also studied the fundamental characteristics of the new plasma source in a collaborative research project the Hieftje Group during a research stay at IU in 2005. Carsten started his postdoctoral research in the Hiefjte Group in 2008. His current research interest lies in imaging and quantitation of proteins and biopolymers with novel, radio frequency glow discharges (rfGDs), in addition to fundamental studies of GDs. |
