Steps Toward a Safer Campus

Stop. Look. Cross. These three words will help you be safe while crossing the street on campus.

Joining your efforts are the Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) and the City of Bloomington Police Department (BPD). Both are working together to help educate the campus community in a series this fall about the new crosswalks installed over the summer. IUPD and BPD will have their presence on Fee Lane area distributing educational pamphlets to the pedestrians about how to use the crosswalks.

You can create a safer environment for drivers, cyclists, and yourself by becoming more aware of your surroundings and taking careful steps while crossing the road.

Keep a few tips in mind before taking a step forward:

  • Follow the signs – Choosing to obey the signs and signals is safer than turning to shortcuts.
  • Keep your ears open – Avoid listening to your iPod or talking on the cellphone while crossing the road.
  • Make eye contact – Before crossing the road be sure to make eye contact with the driver.
  • Look both sides – Before stepping on the street check right and left to be sure that no vehicle is approaching from either side.

In the fall of 2009, IU Bloomington Provost Karen Hanson created the Bloomington Campus Traffic Safety Task Force following a series of pedestrian-related accidents. The task force, comprising faculty, staff, students, and officials from the city of Bloomington, was formed to study traffic safety issues, examine the factors that contributed to the accidents, and recommend measures to improve traffic safety campuswide.
