Sulfates

Sulfides include compounds of the
sulfide ion (S2-) with metallic cations. Sulfates are tetrahedrons in which one
sulfur atom has lost six electrons from its outer shell and has joined with
four oxygen ions (O2-) giving it a formula of SO42-.
Sulfides and sulfates are important economically worldwide. Sphalerite (ZnS) is a major source of zinc ore, and galena (PbS) is a major source of lead.
