Why haven’t we used the word “union” in our name?
Although as we pursue affiliation we will not shy away from using the word “union” to describe ourselves, the committee largely felt that changing our name at this point would be difficult. We have already established ourselves on campus as GEO, and GEO is a common name for grad unions across the country.
Rally:
Speakers:
Ursula will speak for GEO, though anyone else is welcome to volunteer as well! Please email geo_indiana.edu if you’re interested in speaking.
Amos will contact Steve Ashby from the Labor Studies department to see if he would be interested in speaking briefly about why a grad union would be a positive thing.
Jenny will go to the AFSCME meeting on Tuesday and request a speaker to represent AFSCME (Randy Pardue?)
Also, we will have various grad students speak very briefly about their complaints regarding our treatment as employees. The mike will be open to anyone who wishes to express their discontent, so we invite everyone to speak! Ursula and Jennifer will try to get the ball rolling with their own
Posters for rally:
Anyone who would like to contribute sticks for picket signs is welcome, though we’re currently thinking of just holding the signs on their own.
Press release:
Dave will do a press release and submit it to WFHB, WFIU, the Herald Times, and the IDS.
Email flyer:
Ursula will create an email flyer. All GEO members will then be responsible for emailing their respective departments and/or friends to publicize the rally.
One-one-one publicity:
Talk to people in your department and encourage them to join the rally…the more people we get, the better!
Chalking:
Join us for chalking on Tuesday night outside the front of Ballantine (near the kiosk at the intersection of the campus streets) at 7:00

We need to devise a flyer by the time of the rally. Ursula will attempt to modify the old flyer. Elizabeth will make a quarter sheet flyer. Elizabeth will also place us on the WFHB and WFIU Community Calendars.
Content:
Intro: Brad, Elizabeth, and others may be willing to jointly present GEO to the crowd.
Breakout groups: will be led by Ursula, Dave, Jennifer, Brad, Amos, and Chris will lead these.
In breakout groups, we will hand out petitions to those willing to collect signatures, brainstorm how we can get departments more involved, and allow people to contribute their own complaints and discuss what GEO’s goals and strategies should be. Breakout group leaders will be responsible for checking up on dental petitions that are sent out.
IDS:
Due to confusion about our group name on the part of IDS editors, the IDS article on dental care that we hoped to get has been canceled.
