GEO Meeting Minutes 8/19/04
For those of you returning after the summer, welcome back! Please join us next Thursday, August 26 for a GEO meeting at 7:00 pm (place will be announced later). Also, mark your calendars for a beginning-of-the-semester GEO rally on September 9 and a mass meeting at 7:00 on September 15. And we're looking for input! Should we focus our September 9 rally on dental care or should we take a broader stance (including such issues as wages, work load, grievance procedures, etc)? Please email the list with suggestions!
Rally planning:
Ursula contacted Randy Pardue, the president of AFSCME local 832 (IU's maintenance staff) to see if they would be interested in co-sponsoring the rally or otherwise participating in it. Randy said he's interested and will speak with his executive board about it. We hope to hear back from him soon so that we can schedule a time for the rally.
We also would like to ask CWA to participate. Josh has sent an email to Susan Baxter-Fleming inviting them to join us, and we are waiting to hear from them.
We're leaning towards a broader focus on the rally than just dental but are looking for input.
Elizabeth has drafts of flyers for either a dental only or a broad rally. See her if yo'd like to take a look at the drafts.
We need to make signs for the rally. We will either use the money from our dues collection or pass a hat to cover expenses for posterboard, markers, and sticks. We'll have a poster-making meeting either next week or the week after.
We're leaning towards either noon or 4:00 on Sept 9 for the rally, but we're waiting to hear from CWA and AFSCME before making a firm decision.
Presentations for incoming students:
We have several presentations scheduled for incoming graduate students. Those who are participating should remember to bring petitions and membership forms (ask if it's ok to pass these around before doing so). Also, mention the rally and the mass meeting that will be coming up in the next few weeks.
Flyers:
Elizabeth, Josh, and Ursula will distribute flyers to several departments that have agreed to include them in new student materials. If you'd like a copy of the flyer to distribute to your own department, contact umctagga@indiana.edu (Ursula)
Web page:
Ursula will attempt to update the web page with meeting notes. We will need a web-literate person, however, to take over regular mainentance of the web stie as soon as possible.
Mass meeting:
The mass meeting will be Wednesday, September 15 at 7:00. Elizabeth will schedule a room.
