GEO Meeting, August 5, 2004
Members present: Jennifer, Elizabeth, Ursula, Dave, Josh
Orientation Presentations:
We have currently scheduled three presentations for the beginning of the semester:
Sociology: August 24 at 11:15. Josh will take care of this with any other sociology people who care to join him.
English: First-year orientation on Wednesday, august 25 at 10:00-11:30
AI training on either Wednesday or Thursday.
Ursula and Elizabeth will cover these presentations.
History: Dave and Jennifer will take care of these presentations.
Flyering/tabling opportunities:
SPEA
Math
GPSO orientation: August 26, probably between 3-5 (Dave, Ursula, Josh, and Elizabeth will make sure the table is covered)
If anyone has heard back from other departments, please contact the group about this so that we can add any other orientations to the list. Ursula will contact FRIT and German. Dave is attempting to contact SLIS. If anyone would like to contact Linguistics or take over Jennifer's contacts from Music, it would be much appreciated.
Flyer making:
Ursula will work on modifying the old question and answer list that the sociology group developed for our very first mass meeting. Please contact me if you have specific suggestions for items to include. It will include our plans for affiliation, stress that we welcome all graduate students, and define
us as a separate entity from GPSO.
Cheat sheet:
We would like to gather some fast facts about what other unions have won. As I know other people have done some research on contracts at other schools, perhaps they could email the list with some facts that might be useful for our presentations. Also, if someone could agree to compile these into a cheat sheet for presenters, that would be great!
CWA status:
We have not yet met with Susan Baxter-Fleming, the CWA contact. Dave will attempt to contact her ASAP so that we can determine our status.
Mass meeting and rally:
We decided that, since we want to hit the ground running, we should begin now with the process of planning the start of the semester. Our two suggestions are a mass meeting and a rally on dental issues. We tentatively planned to hold a rally first in order to build visibility and then publicize a mass
meeting soon after. At both events, we should be ready to sign people up for membership and petitions. We should also have a list of concrete tasks for new members to perform (i.e., contacting people in their departments or offering to be stewards for their departments).
