GEO steering meeting 4/8/04
Present: Josh, Amos, Jennifer, Dave, Jr., Ursula
Petitioning:
Good job everyone on our petitioning efforts and membership drive that began this week! Special thanks to Josh, who came through at the last minute on several fronts. We now have approximately 90 members and 330 signatures on the dental petition. We would like to continue our petitioning efforts, though due to scheduling difficulties and the approaching end of the semester, we thought an easier plan for these last few weeks would be outdoor canvassing. Next Thursday afternoon was proposed as a time. This would entail any available GEO members spreading out across campus with petitions, membership forms, and clipboards and accosting passers by. The advantage of this option is that it doesn't require scheduling and setting up a table. Can anyone participate or suggest good/bad times of day?
This summer and future plans:
We decided that a first priority for GEO should be a more solid long-term plan for our organization and for the dental campaign. We need more members at meetings to discuss these plans adequately.
Long-term GEO as organization suggestions:
Dave and I (as members of the unionization committee) think we should look into affiliation more seriously next year. If we want to establish a permanent, legal, and effective association, we think this might be a necessary step. We want all GEO members to enter this debate.
Dental campaign future:
We need to establish a time-line for the petition as well as a plan for post-petition projects if, as seems likely, the administration continues to say "no" after receiving the petition. What steps are we willing to
take and when? We also want general participation in this discussion.
Web site:
Jr. needs people to test out the web site and to fill out a survey for him in order to complete the requriements for his class. He will be doing this Saturday afternoon in the main library, so contact him if you can do it (atidal@indiana.edu). Since he did all the hard work of creating a web
site for us, this is the least we can do! Thanks, Jr!
Money issues:
Now that we have a little money ($25 and some change after button and card costs), we decided we should appoint a treasurer. Any volunteers? Also...where will we put this money and how will we deal with it?
Storage space:
Now that we have petitions, a banner, and a money box, we need a central place to store it. Student activities offers offices in the student activities tower, though they are not cheap ($50 a semester, I think?).
