Info for Maintaining GEO email and ListServ email lists If you have trouble call the UITS Support Center at 855-6789. To manage the GEO web account go to: www.iub.edu/~geo/documents/geoWebMaintenance.html. ************************************************************* geo@indiana.edu email account: We have an email account which should be checked periodically. Due to the fact that the university might want to read our email, we probably shouldn't use this account for any sensitive information. If you don't like using webmail (webmail.iu.edu), I suggest that you use an IMAP email reader like Eudora, Mozilla Mail, Thunderbird, Netscape Mail, or PINE. Read the IU Knowledge Base for info on how to set up an IMAP client: http://www.kb.indiana.edu/data/anhe.html It is not recommend that you use Outlook or Outlook Express, because of all the viruses designed for MS email programs. Netscape Mail is available on all campus computers and can also be freely downloaded at http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/ I like Mozilla Mail and Thunderbird because they are Free Software--they can be downloaded at http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/ and http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/ respectively. ************************************************************* GEO Email lists GEO has 4 email lists: geo_members@indiana.edu geo_organizers@indiana.edu geo_posters@indiana.edu geosteering@lists.riseup.net The geo_members list is for general announcements to the GEO membership. To keep email to a minimum, only people on the geo_posters lists have the right to post messages to the geo_members list. If someone else tries to post to the geo_members list, the message will bounce to the geo@indiana.edu email account. The geo_organizers is for GEO organizers and anyone subscribed to the list can post to it. Anyone on the geo_posters list can send messages to the geo_members and the geo_organizers email lists. Being subscribed to the geo_posters list only gives you posting rights, not reading rights, to geo_members and geo_organizers. This allows people on the steering committee to post to these lists using their non-IU accounts, but not receive email from these lists. The geo_steering@indiana.edu list is no longer used because we feared that the IU administration might try to read our email. Instead, people on the GEO steering committee communicate through the geosteering@lists.riseup.net list. All members of the GEO steering committee are subscribed to the geosteering@lists.riseup.net using an email account outside the IU system. If you don't already have non-IU email account, you can set one up with www.riseup.net. To subscribe to geosteering@lists.riseup.net, go to https://lists.riseup.net/www/info/geosteering, click on "subscribe" and enter your email address. I assume that new subscribers have to be approved, before they are accepted on the list. (I didn't set up this list, so I'm not sure how it works). ************************************************************* Maintaining IU ListServ email lists via the web If you want to add, delete, or change any subscriber, go to: https://listserv.indiana.edu/cgi-bin/wa-iub.exe And click on "Mailing List Management Interface" After you enter geo@indiana.edu and the password, then click on "follow this link" in the next page. (If you have set up a cookie to log you in as a different person, you will need to click on "Log out" and log back in as geo@indiana.edu). Then you will be in the list management page. To add somebody, select the list name from the drop down box, then click on "Subscribers". In the next page, enter the name and address and click on "Add to GEO_listname" To unsubscribe someone, enter their username in the box under "Examine or delete a subscription" and click on "Search in GEO_listname" If the name is found in the list, you can delete it by clicking on "Delete" or "Delete from All Lists" To get a complete list of subscribers, click on "in a browser window" under the section "Review the list membership." For more info on ListServ, go to http://www.kb.indiana.edu and do a search for "listserv" ***************************************************** Maintaining IU Listserv lists via email: To subscribe someone to a list, send an email to listserv@indiana.edu with the command in the body of the message: ADD listname emailaddress [fullname] //anything in [] is optional For example, the comand to add Jane Doe and John Hancock to the juggling_steering list would be: add geo_members jdoe@indiana.edu Jane Doe add geo_members jhancock@indiana John Hancock To unsubscribe someone from a list, send an email to listserv@indiana.edu with the command in the body of the message: DEL listname emailaddress For example, the comand to delete John Doe from the geo_members list would be: del geo_members jdoe@indiana.edu To get the list of subscribers to a list and the configuration of a list, send an email to listserv@indiana.edu with the command in the body of the message: GET listname To change the list of subscribers or the configuration of the list, edit the results that you got with the GET command. Then send them back to listserv@indiana.edu with the command in the body of the message. PUTALL listname ...[new configuration and subscriber list] In order to add someone as an owner of a list, add the line to the configuration of list: OWNER= emailaddress [fullname] //anything in [] is optional For example, if you want both Jane Doe and John Hancock to maintain the list, add the lines: owner= jdoe@indiana.edu Jane Doe owner= jhancock@indiana.edu John Hancock The listserv program monitors email addresses which bounce messages. After five days, those address will be removed from the list. *********************************************************
